MIAMI, Fla., July 27, 2026
Veru Inc. announced the successful completion of patient enrollment in its Phase 2b PLATEAU clinical trial, exceeding its target enrollment of 200 patients. The study is evaluating oral enobosarm (3 mg) in combination with semaglutide in older adults aged 65 years and above with obesity (BMI ≥35). The trial is designed to determine whether the combination can deliver higher-quality weight loss by maximizing fat reduction while preserving lean muscle mass, physical function, and bone mineral density. Interim analysis results are expected in the first quarter of 2027, with final topline data anticipated in the fourth quarter of 2027. The enrollment milestone marks significant progress in Veru’s strategy to develop next-generation obesity therapies for aging populations.
PLATEAU Trial Focuses on Preserving Muscle During Weight Loss
The Phase 2b PLATEAU study is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial evaluating approximately 200 older patients initiating semaglutide treatment for obesity. Participants receive either enobosarm 3 mg or placebo alongside semaglutide over a 68-week treatment period. The primary endpoint measures the percentage change in total body weight, while important secondary endpoints include fat mass, lean body mass, physical function, bone mineral density, mobility assessments, HbA1c, insulin resistance, and patient-reported outcomes. The trial is specifically designed to determine whether enobosarm can overcome the weight-loss plateau commonly observed with GLP-1 receptor agonists by preserving muscle tissue and maintaining physical performance, enabling patients to continue losing body fat more effectively throughout treatment.
Program Builds on Positive Phase 2b QUALITY Results
The PLATEAU study follows encouraging findings from Veru’s previously completed Phase 2b QUALITY trial, which evaluated enobosarm in combination with semaglutide in 168 older patients with obesity. That study demonstrated that enobosarm preserved lean muscle mass and physical function while enhancing fat loss during active weight reduction. Furthermore, during the maintenance extension phase, enobosarm monotherapy helped prevent weight regain after semaglutide was discontinued, supporting its potential role in long-term obesity management. Veru also strengthened the development program through a clinical supply agreement with Novo Nordisk, announced in June 2026, ensuring continued support for the ongoing PLATEAU trial evaluating combination therapy.
Veru Advances Next-Generation Obesity Treatment Strategy
With enrollment now complete, Veru is positioned to generate important clinical evidence supporting enobosarm as a combination therapy with GLP-1 receptor agonists for older adults living with obesity. The company aims to address a significant unmet need by improving the quality of weight loss, emphasizing preservation of muscle mass, mobility, and bone health rather than focusing solely on total body weight reduction. As obesity therapies continue to evolve, maintaining physical function has become increasingly important, particularly in elderly patients who often have lower muscle reserves. The upcoming interim analysis in early 2027 and final Phase 2b results later that year are expected to provide critical insights into whether enobosarm can become a differentiated adjunct therapy that enhances the long-term benefits of GLP-1-based weight management treatments.
