Teva Pharmaceuticals announced new real-world data demonstrating that treatment with AUSTEDO® (deutetrabenazine) tablets and AUSTEDO XR® extended-release tablets improved quality of life for patients living with Huntington’s disease (HD) chorea and reduced caregiving burden. The findings, presented at the Advanced Therapeutics in Movement & Related Disorders Congress 2026 in Washington, D.C., represent results from the first decentralized real-world study evaluating patient- and caregiver-reported outcomes associated with HD chorea management.
Real-World Data Highlight Daily Burden of HD Chorea
Survey results revealed the significant impact Huntington’s disease chorea has on both patients and caregivers. Prior to treatment, between 68% and 84% of patients reported that chorea negatively affected their emotional wellbeing, social interactions, daily activities, and recreational or vocational life. Caregivers also reported substantial challenges, with up to 83% stating that caregiving responsibilities affected their own daily functioning, emotional health, and social activities. Participants identified goals centered on maintaining independence, improving social engagement, and enhancing overall quality of life.
AUSTEDO Treatment Improves Symptoms and Quality of Life
Following treatment with AUSTEDO or AUSTEDO XR, 74% of patients reported improvements in chorea symptoms, according to the Patient Global Impression of Change (PGIC) scale. More than 85% of treated patients reported meaningful progress in daily activities such as walking, dressing, and eating, as well as improvements in social participation with family and friends. The findings suggest that effective management of involuntary movements can extend benefits beyond symptom control, helping patients maintain independence and improve overall wellbeing.

Reduced Caregiver Burden Observed
The study also demonstrated significant benefits for caregivers. As patients experienced reduced chorea-related impairment, 77% of caregivers reported improvements in their own quality of life, including reduced stress, emotional burden, and social limitations. Researchers noted that Huntington’s disease affects entire families, making caregiver-focused outcomes an important component of treatment evaluation. The results highlight the broader impact of symptom management on both patients and those providing ongoing support.
Supporting Long-Term HD Chorea Management
AUSTEDO and AUSTEDO XR are the only FDA-approved VMAT2 inhibitors indicated for the treatment of chorea associated with Huntington’s disease and tardive dyskinesia in adults. The real-world findings reinforce the value of symptom control in addressing the physical, emotional, and social consequences of HD chorea. Teva stated that the results further support its commitment to developing patient-centered therapies that improve daily functioning and quality of life for individuals living with neurological disorders.
