Secaucus, New Jersey, United States, October 14, 2026
Pierre Fabre Pharmaceuticals Inc. announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted the resubmission of the Biologics License Application (BLA) for tabelecleucel, an investigational immunotherapy developed for patients with Epstein–Barr virus-positive post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (EBV+ PTLD). The proposed indication covers adult and pediatric patients aged two years and older who have received at least one previous therapy. The FDA has assigned a Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) target action date of March 31, 2027, establishing the anticipated timeline for the agency’s regulatory decision. The resubmission represents an important milestone for patients facing this rare and potentially life-threatening malignancy, particularly those whose disease has returned or failed to respond to initial treatment.
Updated Clinical Evidence Supports FDA Resubmission
Pierre Fabre Pharmaceuticals resubmitted the BLA following alignment with the FDA during a Type A meeting in April 2026. The updated application includes additional patient data and longer follow-up from the pivotal Phase 3 ALLELE study, an ongoing, single-arm clinical trial evaluating tabelecleucel in adults and children aged two years and older with relapsed or refractory EBV+ PTLD following solid organ transplantation or hematopoietic cell transplantation. The submission also incorporates supplemental evidence from expanded access programs, a separate clinical study and European commercial experience. These additional data are intended to provide the FDA with a broader understanding of the treatment’s clinical evidence and experience in patients with this rare disease. The expanded dataset reflects the company’s efforts to address regulatory requirements through continued dialogue with the agency. According to Pierre Fabre Pharmaceuticals, the resubmission follows extensive discussions with the FDA regarding the evidence supporting potential approval. The agency’s acceptance means that the application can proceed through regulatory review; however, tabelecleucel remains investigational in the United States and has not yet received FDA approval. The final decision will depend on the FDA’s assessment of the submitted clinical and supporting information.
Tabelecleucel Targets EBV-Infected Cells in PTLD
Tabelecleucel is an allogeneic, off-the-shelf, Epstein–Barr virus-specific T-cell immunotherapy designed to recognize and attack EBV-infected cells. EBV+ PTLD is a rare hematological malignancy that can develop after transplantation when immunosuppressive treatment weakens the immune system’s ability to control EBV-infected cells. The disease can affect people who have undergone solid organ transplantation or allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. Treatment options remain particularly limited for patients whose disease progresses or returns after initial therapy. The company reports median survival figures of approximately three weeks for hematopoietic cell transplant recipients and 4.1 months for solid organ transplant recipients in the setting of failed initial treatment. These outcomes highlight the urgent need for additional therapeutic approaches. Tabelecleucel is designed to provide targeted cellular immunotherapy by directing donor-derived T cells against EBV-infected cells. Its off-the-shelf approach is intended to make treatment available without requiring the manufacturing process to begin individually for every patient. The potential availability of this treatment could represent an important development for eligible patients if the FDA ultimately grants authorization. The therapy has already received European Commission marketing authorization under the brand name EBVALLO™ in December 2022. It subsequently received authorization in the United Kingdom in May 2023 and Switzerland in May 2024. In the United States, eligible patients may access the investigational treatment through clinical trials and expanded access programs.
FDA Decision Expected by March 2027
The FDA’s March 31, 2027, PDUFA target action date marks the next major regulatory milestone for tabelecleucel. If approved, the treatment would become the first FDA-authorized therapy specifically for relapsed or refractory EBV+ PTLD, according to Pierre Fabre Pharmaceuticals. The proposed indication includes both adult and pediatric patients aged two years and older who have received at least one previous therapy. This population includes transplant recipients who may face substantial treatment challenges because of their underlying medical circumstances and immunosuppression. For Pierre Fabre Pharmaceuticals, the application highlights its focus on oncology and rare diseases with significant unmet medical needs. The company is continuing to pursue regulatory review while the FDA evaluates the resubmitted evidence. The upcoming decision will determine whether tabelecleucel can become an approved treatment option for eligible patients in the United States. Until then, FDA approval remains pending, and the therapy’s potential role in clinical practice will depend on the outcome of the regulatory review.
