WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., and SACRAMENTO, Calif., June 30, 2026
Headlands Research announced the acquisition of Clinical Trials Research (CTR), a privately owned clinical research organization operating in Sacramento and Lincoln, California. Following the acquisition, the sites will operate as Headlands Research – Sacramento and Headlands Research – CTR Lincoln, further expanding Headlands’ growing North American network of wholly owned clinical research sites. The addition strengthens the company’s capabilities in cardiometabolic research while increasing access to experienced investigators, diverse patient populations, and enhanced operational support for pharmaceutical companies and contract research organizations (CROs).
Acquisition Strengthens Clinical Trial Network
Clinical Trials Research brings more than 25 years of clinical research experience and a proven track record of conducting over 300 Phase I–IV clinical trials. The organization has established a reputation for rapid study startup, strong patient recruitment, and delivery of high-quality clinical data across multiple therapeutic areas. By integrating CTR into its network, Headlands Research aims to expand its infrastructure while providing sponsors with greater clinical trial capacity and broader geographic coverage in California.
Extensive Cardiometabolic Research Expertise
The Sacramento-area sites have significant experience conducting clinical studies in cardiometabolic and chronic disease indications, including high cholesterol, hypertension, heart failure prevention, obesity, overweight, type 2 diabetes, diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain, fatty liver disease, and chronic idiopathic constipation. Headlands stated that the acquisition enhances its ability to support pharmaceutical sponsors developing therapies in rapidly growing therapeutic areas while improving patient access to innovative clinical trials.
Experienced Leadership Supports Continued Growth
Clinical Trials Research is led by Jeffrey D. Wayne, M.D., who has served as a principal investigator since 1992. A board-certified internist and clinical faculty member at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, Dr. Wayne has extensive research experience spanning cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory disorders, and women’s and men’s health. According to the company, joining Headlands Research will provide additional infrastructure and operational resources while enabling the sites to expand their research capabilities and continue delivering high-quality clinical trial services to sponsors and patients.
