DUBLIN, Ireland, July 28, 2026 – ICON plc announced a multi-year strategic collaboration with Anthropic to integrate Claude artificial intelligence capabilities across the clinical trial lifecycle, expanding the company’s digital innovation strategy and strengthening its secure Orbis AI platform. Through the collaboration, ICON will work closely with Anthropic’s Life Sciences research team to develop advanced AI-powered capabilities that improve decision-making, streamline clinical operations, and accelerate the development of new medicines. The partnership combines ICON’s global clinical research expertise, proprietary trial intelligence, and operational capabilities with Anthropic’s frontier AI models to help sponsors improve trial planning, optimize study execution, and deliver therapies to patients more efficiently.
AI Capabilities to Enhance Trial Planning and Operations
As part of the collaboration, ICON will introduce four production-ready AI capabilities within its Orbis platform. These include site intelligence and study planning, where AI-powered reasoning will strengthen the company’s OneSearch and OnePlan tools to improve site selection and study feasibility. The platform will also deliver predictive intelligence capable of identifying enrollment risks, operational trends, and performance signals across active clinical trials in real time. Additional capabilities include protocol optimization, using AI-driven scenario modeling to reduce protocol amendments and accelerate study startup timelines, as well as ecosystem integration, allowing pharmaceutical sponsors to securely access ICON’s clinical insights directly through Claude. Together, these technologies are intended to improve trial efficiency while supporting more informed decision-making throughout clinical development
Claude Deployment Supports Organization-Wide AI Adoption
Beyond platform enhancements, ICON will implement a phased deployment of Claude across multiple business functions using a role-based adoption strategy. Claude Code will support software development teams, Claude will assist knowledge workers with operational and administrative tasks, and Claude Science will provide advanced capabilities for scientific and clinical research teams. According to ICON, the collaboration supports three core pillars of its AI strategy: strengthening the intelligence layer powering the Orbis platform, increasing workforce productivity by automating repetitive processes, and developing specialized AI agents embedded directly within clinical development workflows. Chief Executive Officer Barry Balfe said the partnership provides direct access to frontier AI technology that will enable sponsors to make better decisions earlier, execute studies with greater precision, and accelerate the delivery of innovative therapies to patients.
Partnership Aims to Reduce Clinical Trial Delays
Anthropic highlighted the significant opportunity for artificial intelligence to address longstanding operational challenges that continue to slow clinical research. Pip White, Head of Ireland, UK and Northern Europe at Anthropic, noted that patient enrollment remains one of the most significant bottlenecks in clinical development, contributing to delays in approximately 80% of clinical trials. By combining Claude’s advanced AI capabilities with ICON’s extensive experience in global trial execution, the collaboration seeks to improve enrollment forecasting, optimize study performance, and enhance operational efficiency across the clinical research process.
