Clearmind Medicine announced positive ex vivo results demonstrating enhanced nasal retention for its intranasal formulation of MEAI (5-Methoxy-2-aminoindane), a non-hallucinogenic psychedelic-derived neuroplastogen being developed for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). The findings support the company’s strategy to improve drug absorption and therapeutic performance through an advanced nasal drug-delivery platform.
Mucoadhesive Formulation Improves Nasal Residence Time
The ex vivo mucoadhesion study evaluated the intranasal MEAI formulation using freshly isolated rabbit nasal mucosa and compared its performance with a conventional non-mucoadhesive MEAI solution. Throughout the 30-minute evaluation period, the proprietary formulation consistently retained a greater proportion of the administered dose on the nasal tissue, demonstrating significantly improved residence time and stronger mucosal adhesion.
Enhanced Drug Delivery May Improve Therapeutic Performance
Clearmind’s intranasal formulation incorporates a specialized mucoadhesive polymer system designed to overcome rapid mucociliary clearance, one of the primary challenges associated with nasal drug delivery. By extending contact time between MEAI and the nasal mucosa, the formulation is expected to provide greater opportunities for drug absorption, more consistent dosing, and potentially improved therapeutic effectiveness for Alcohol Use Disorder and other future indications.
Supports Development of Next-Generation Neuroplastogen Therapies
The positive retention data represent an important milestone in Clearmind’s intranasal MEAI development program and further validate its proprietary nasal drug-delivery platform. The company is developing MEAI as a non-hallucinogenic neuroplastogen for the treatment of Alcohol Use Disorder, addiction, and weight management, with the goal of delivering differentiated psychedelic-inspired therapies that improve patient outcomes while minimizing hallucinogenic effects.
