Caristo Diagnostics announced that new University of Oxford-led research using its AI technologies will be presented at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress 2026, taking place August 28–31 in Munich, Germany. The research will expand the scientific evaluation of Caristo’s cardiovascular AI platform across non-contrast cardiac CT, stroke prediction and virtual assessment of arterial inflammation. The ESC program includes a late-breaking clinical science presentation examining whether routine cardiac CT can be used with artificial intelligence to identify atrial myopathy and predict cardioembolic stroke. Additional investigator-led research will assess the prognostic value of FAI-Score™ for detecting inflammatory signals on cardiac CT and evaluating cardiovascular risk.
Caristo AI Platform Expands Beyond Coronary Imaging
The ESC presentations are expected to demonstrate the broader research potential of Caristo’s AI technology, particularly its ability to extract information about cardiovascular inflammation from routinely acquired imaging. One highlighted study, ORFAN-MAESTRIA, will investigate the use of AI to detect atrial myopathy and predict cardioembolic stroke from routine cardiac CT scans. The research will be presented by Prof. Charalambos Antoniades during the Late-Breaking Clinical Science session on August 31. Other research will examine whether coronary inflammation quantified from both contrast and non-contrast cardiac CT can identify high-risk individuals independently of coronary calcification. This work is particularly relevant to patients with a zero calcium score, where conventional calcium-based assessment may not fully capture underlying cardiovascular risk. Together, these studies illustrate how AI-supported CT analysis could potentially provide additional biological information beyond conventional anatomical imaging.
FAI-Score Research Targets Inflammation and Risk Prediction
Another major focus at ESC 2026 will be the continued investigation of FAI-Score, Caristo’s technology for quantifying inflammatory signals associated with cardiovascular disease. Research from the ORFAN Study will examine whether coronary inflammation can predict cardiovascular risk even in individuals without standard modifiable risk factors. A separate analysis involving more than 80,000 patients from the UK and United States will evaluate a “virtual biopsy” of arterial cytokine activation and its ability to predict long-term cardiac mortality. These studies are important to the evolving field of cardiovascular risk stratification because they explore whether imaging-derived measures of inflammation can identify biological risk that may not be apparent from traditional clinical risk factors alone. The research remains investigational and is intended to explore potential future applications of the technology rather than establish new clinical indications.
CaRi-Heart and CaRi-Plaque Support Clinical AI Portfolio
The ESC research builds on Caristo Diagnostics’ existing cardiovascular imaging portfolio. CaRi-Heart® has received U.S. FDA De Novo marketing authorization and is designed to quantify coronary inflammation from routine coronary CT angiography. The technology is also commercially available in Europe, the UK, Switzerland and Australia. CaRi-Plaque® has received U.S. FDA clearance for AI-assisted coronary plaque and stenosis analysis, providing quantitative assessment of coronary plaque alongside Caristo’s inflammation-focused technology. The company said the new ESC research represents emerging applications that are distinct from and build upon its currently available clinical portfolio. By investigating non-contrast CT analysis, stroke prediction and arterial inflammation assessment, Caristo is expanding the potential role of AI-powered cardiovascular imaging from coronary disease characterization toward broader cardiovascular risk prediction and disease management.
