BOSTON, Mass. — October 1, 2026
Vima Therapeutics announced that it will present four research posters at the 2026 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders (MDS), taking place October 4–8 in Seoul, South Korea. The presentations will examine treatment gaps, real-world treatment patterns and healthcare resource utilization in isolated dystonia, alongside preclinical research supporting the potential of targeting multiple muscarinic cholinergic receptors in dystonia and Parkinson’s disease. Vima is developing VIM0423, an investigational oral therapy intended to address movement disorders by targeting mechanisms underlying disease-related motor dysfunction. The company said the research program highlights the clinical and economic burden experienced by people living with dystonia and provides additional mechanistic rationale for developing new oral treatment approaches.
Vima Highlights Treatment Gaps in Isolated Dystonia
Three of the four MDS presentations focus on the treatment experience and healthcare burden associated with isolated dystonia in the United States. The research includes analyses of treatment patterns among adults with isolated dystonia, healthcare resource utilization and associated costs, and findings from an observational study of individuals living with the condition. Dystonia is characterized by involuntary muscle contractions affecting one or more parts of the body and can occur across different age groups. Vima said the research is intended to characterize the limitations of current treatment approaches and the broader impact of the disease on patients. The company noted that people with dystonia may rely on combinations of interventions and off-label medications, while there are currently no approved oral therapies specifically for isolated dystonia. The presentations are designed to provide additional information on the clinical burden and unmet treatment needs associated with the condition.
Preclinical Research Supports Muscarinic Targeting
Vima will also present preclinical research evaluating muscarinic receptor antagonism beyond the M4 receptor in models of dystonia and Parkinson’s disease. The company’s scientific approach is based on the role of dopamine and acetylcholine signaling in movement disorders. According to Vima, an imbalance between these signaling systems can contribute to excessive cholinergic activity and signaling through muscarinic cholinergic receptors, which may contribute to movement-related symptoms. The preclinical presentation will examine whether targeting multiple muscarinic receptors can provide greater efficacy than focusing on M4 alone. This research is intended to provide mechanistic support for Vima’s development strategy and its investigation of muscarinic receptor modulation as a potential approach to treating dystonia and Parkinson’s disease. The findings remain preclinical and are intended to inform further development rather than establish clinical efficacy.
VIM0423 Advances Oral Movement Disorder Strategy
The MDS presentations support Vima Therapeutics’ broader development strategy for VIM0423, its investigational oral therapy for isolated dystonia and Parkinson’s disease. Vima was founded and incubated at Atlas Venture by physicians and scientists specializing in movement disorders and is developing VIM0423 as a potential first-in-class therapy. The company’s research program combines clinical and real-world evidence on the burden of dystonia with preclinical studies investigating the biological mechanisms that may be targeted therapeutically. By presenting data on treatment patterns, healthcare costs, patient experience and muscarinic receptor biology at MDS 2026, Vima is expanding the evidence base supporting its approach to developing oral therapies for movement disorders.
