CAMBRIDGE, Mass., August 6, 2026
Vedanta Biosciences announced it has secured $60 million in funding to accelerate development of VE303, its investigational microbiome-based oral therapy for preventing recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI). The financing includes a $40 million investment led by existing investors AMR Action Fund and BNP Paribas Asset Management Alts, alongside an additional $20 million from the U.S. Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) under an existing contract. The funding will primarily support the ongoing Phase 3 RESTORATiVE303 clinical trial, which has already surpassed 80% patient enrollment and remains on track to complete enrollment during 2026, with topline efficacy data expected in the first half of 2027. Alongside the financing, the company strengthened its leadership by appointing Dr. Manos Perros as Executive Chairman and Andrew Davis as an independent Board Director, reinforcing its preparations for potential regulatory submission and commercialization.
Phase 3 RESTORATiVE303 Trial Advances Toward Key Readout
Vedanta’s pivotal RESTORATiVE303 study is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled multinational Phase 3 trial evaluating the safety and efficacy of VE303 in patients at high risk of recurrent CDI following antibiotic treatment. The study is enrolling participants across more than 150 clinical sites in approximately 20 countries, making it one of the largest microbiome therapeutic studies conducted for recurrent CDI. Earlier this year, the independent Data Monitoring Committee (DMC) completed its first prespecified interim analysis and recommended the trial continue without modification, confirming that efficacy exceeded predefined futility thresholds while identifying no significant safety concerns or new adverse events. The trial’s primary endpoint measures CDI recurrence at Week 8, with participants randomized to receive either a 14-day oral course of VE303 or placebo. The study is intended to support a future Biologics License Application (BLA) submission to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
VE303 Represents Next-Generation Microbiome Therapeutics
VE303 is an investigational live biotherapeutic product (LBP) designed to restore healthy gut microbiota and prevent recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection, a serious gastrointestinal disease associated with repeated antibiotic exposure and intestinal dysbiosis. Unlike fecal microbiota-based therapies, VE303 consists of a defined consortium of eight purified bacterial strains manufactured from clonal bacterial cell banks, producing a highly standardized oral formulation without relying on donor-derived fecal material. The therapy has previously received both FDA Orphan Drug Designation and Fast Track Designation, reflecting its potential to address a significant unmet medical need. Recurrent CDI affects approximately 175,000 patients annually in the United States, contributes to nearly 20,000 deaths each year, and remains associated with repeated hospitalizations, diminished quality of life, and increasing risk of subsequent recurrences following each infection episode.
Funding and Leadership Position Company for Future Commercialization
The latest financing provides Vedanta with resources to complete its registrational program while strengthening its leadership team with executives experienced in drug development, regulatory approvals, strategic transactions, and commercialization. Dr. Manos Perros brings more than three decades of pharmaceutical R&D leadership, including oversight of multiple FDA-approved anti-infective therapies, while Andrew Davis contributes extensive expertise in business development, mergers and acquisitions, and commercialization across infectious disease and gastroenterology. Company leadership stated that the continued support from existing investors and BARDA reinforces confidence in the scientific potential of VE303 and the company’s microbiome platform. With enrollment nearing completion and pivotal efficacy results anticipated in 2027, Vedanta is positioning itself to become a leading developer of microbiome-based therapeutics capable of addressing recurrent infectious diseases through targeted restoration of the human gut microbiome
