Takeda has entered into a landmark collaboration with the Government of Indonesia to strengthen the country’s healthcare resilience by expanding access to plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMPs) and establishing a sustainable plasma ecosystem. The initiative follows the Indonesian Ministry of Health’s approval of a plasma fractionation license for Takeda, enabling the company to collect and fractionate plasma as part of a multi-phased strategy designed to improve long-term healthcare access while positioning Indonesia as a regional hub for advanced biopharmaceutical manufacturing. Takeda also announced an initial investment of up to US$30 million to launch a pilot National Plasma Donation Network, reinforcing its commitment to increasing the availability of life-saving plasma therapies and supporting Indonesia’s ambitions to strengthen domestic healthcare capabilities.
Takeda to Invest $30 Million in Indonesia’s Plasma Ecosystem
The collaboration represents one of the most significant healthcare infrastructure investments in Southeast Asia focused on plasma-derived therapies. Under the first phase of the initiative, Takeda will invest up to US$30 million over two years to establish plasma donation centers across Indonesia, utilizing its global expertise in plasma collection while adhering to stringent international quality and regulatory standards. These facilities will become part of Takeda’s BioLife plasma center network, helping evaluate operational feasibility before expanding into a nationwide plasma donation system. The investment is also expected to create highly skilled employment opportunities for healthcare professionals, laboratory technicians, and manufacturing specialists while supporting workforce training and international technology transfer. By strengthening local plasma collection capabilities, Indonesia aims to improve the availability of essential therapies used to treat patients with rare diseases, immune disorders, bleeding conditions, and other serious illnesses requiring plasma-derived medicines.
Indonesia Eyes Regional Leadership in Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing
Beyond plasma collection, the partnership includes plans to evaluate the feasibility of constructing a state-of-the-art plasma-derived therapy manufacturing facility capable of serving both Indonesia and international markets. Such a facility would significantly strengthen regional pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity while reducing reliance on imported plasma therapies. Indonesia’s government views the initiative as an opportunity to accelerate technology transfer, create high-value employment, and develop advanced life sciences capabilities. The collaboration also addresses the growing demand for plasma-derived medicinal products, particularly across the ASEAN region where limited awareness, underdiagnosis, and supply constraints continue to restrict patient access. Initially, plasma collected through Indonesian donation centers will be processed within Takeda’s existing global manufacturing network while prioritizing domestic patient needs. The first plasma donation center is expected to become operational in 2027, marking the beginning of a long-term effort to establish a resilient and sustainable plasma ecosystem that supports both national healthcare security and the global supply of critical therapies.
