Bavarian Nordic announced that its Brazilian partner Eurofarma has submitted a marketing authorization application to Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) for CHIKV VLP, the company’s chikungunya vaccine, for individuals aged 12 years and older. The submission marks a significant milestone in the companies’ partnership and represents an important step toward expanding vaccine access in one of the countries most heavily affected by chikungunya.
Regulatory Filing Supports Expansion into Endemic Markets
The regulatory submission follows the exclusive distribution agreement signed between Bavarian Nordic and Eurofarma in January 2026. Under the agreement, Eurofarma is responsible for regulatory activities, commercialization, and distribution of the vaccine in Brazil, while Bavarian Nordic will continue to manufacture and supply the product. The collaboration is intended to strengthen vaccine availability in regions where chikungunya remains a major public health concern.
Single-Dose CHIKV VLP Vaccine Targets Rapid Protection
CHIKV VLP is a single-dose, prefilled, adjuvanted recombinant virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine designed to provide active immunization against chikungunya virus infection in people aged 12 years and older. The vaccine does not contain viral genetic material, making it non-infectious, and has demonstrated the ability to generate protective immune responses as early as one week after vaccination. The vaccine is already approved under the trade name VIMKUNYA® in the United States, European Union, United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Canada.

Brazil Remains a Priority Market for Chikungunya Prevention
Brazil continues to account for more than half of reported global chikungunya cases and related deaths, highlighting the urgent need for preventive vaccination strategies. Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral disease that can cause severe joint pain, fever, rash, fatigue, and long-term chronic symptoms lasting months or even years. Bavarian Nordic believes expanding regulatory approvals into endemic regions through local partnerships such as Eurofarma will improve access to innovative vaccines and strengthen disease prevention efforts across Latin America.
