Roche Diagnostics is strengthening Ebola testing capacity in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by providing molecular laboratory equipment and technical support to the Institut National de Santé Publique (INSP). The initiative comes as the country continues responding to an outbreak of Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus, with demand for laboratory testing exceeding currently available capacity. Roche has supplied two molecular testing instruments to support the DRC’s Ministry of Health-led response and plans to preconfigure the equipment and train local laboratory technicians before deployment to Bunia. The collaboration is designed to expand local testing capabilities, support validation of a Research Use Only molecular PCR test and help strengthen laboratory preparedness for the current outbreak and future infectious disease emergencies.
Roche Provides Molecular Testing Equipment and Training
Roche Diagnostics has delivered two instruments, including LightCycler and Magna Pure systems, to INSP as part of efforts to increase laboratory capacity in the DRC. Before the equipment is deployed to Bunia, Roche will support preconfiguration and provide training for local laboratory technicians. The trained teams will then participate in validation activities for testing the Bundibugyo virus, an important step toward establishing additional local testing capabilities. By combining laboratory equipment with technical training, the initiative aims to strengthen the ability of local teams to conduct essential testing closer to affected communities. Rapid access to reliable molecular testing is critical during infectious disease outbreaks, supporting case detection, surveillance and public health decision-making.
Bundibugyo Virus Test Supports Outbreak Response
The equipment delivery follows Roche’s earlier development of a Research Use Only molecular PCR test targeting Bundibugyo virus. Once local validation is completed, Roche anticipates that additional tests could be shipped and further instruments deployed to support the response. The company emphasized that the collaboration with INSP is intended not only to address immediate testing requirements but also to build local laboratory expertise and sustainable diagnostic capacity. Laboratory testing plays a central role in identifying infections, supporting surveillance activities and helping health authorities understand the spread of an outbreak. Roche’s contribution therefore combines diagnostic technology, laboratory infrastructure and technical knowledge to support healthcare teams responding to the ongoing situation.
Roche Supports Local Laboratory Preparedness
The initiative also highlights the importance of public-private collaboration during major infectious disease outbreaks. Roche is working with INSP and local laboratory teams to identify areas where additional equipment, testing support and technical assistance could strengthen the response. According to the information provided by Roche, international health authorities have assessed the situation as a significant public health concern, reinforcing the need for effective surveillance and case detection. The company’s support is intended to contribute to immediate Ebola testing requirements while also helping strengthen preparedness for future outbreaks and pandemics. As validation progresses, Roche anticipates expanding support through additional instruments and expedited delivery of tests where needed. The effort demonstrates how diagnostic companies can work alongside public health institutions to expand access to molecular testing and strengthen infectious disease response capabilities. Roche’s involvement in the DRC Ebola response reflects the growing importance of advanced diagnostics, local laboratory capacity and coordinated healthcare partnerships in managing emerging infectious disease threats.
