RIVANNA, a medical technology company developing AI-enabled clinical decision-support solutions, has reached a significant intellectual-property milestone with its 100th patent filing, strengthening protection around its integrated platform of artificial intelligence, ultrasound imaging, clinical datasets, and medical technology. The company announced that its intellectual-property estate now includes more than 100 active issued and pending patents across more than 20 patent families, with the portfolio growing approximately 30% year over year. The milestone reflects RIVANNA’s strategy of developing a shared technology foundation that can support multiple clinical applications and FDA-cleared product lines.
AI-Powered Ultrasound Patent Expands Diagnostic Platform
RIVANNA’s 100th filing is U.S. patent application #64/080,862, which describes an AI-powered ultrasound pathology detection pipeline designed to support automated computer-aided detection capabilities on the Accuro XV platform. The application focuses on automated identification of pathology from volumetric ultrasound imaging and is structured as a foundational filing intended to support future continuation applications as the technology develops. The company said the architecture is centered on automated fracture and fracture-associated pathology detection, while also providing a framework that may be applicable to other imaging workflows, including musculoskeletal, cardiac, lung, and obstetric applications. A key component of the technology is the integration of customized multi-channel ultrasound inputs with proprietary image-enhancement technology based on BoneEnhance. The system is designed to provide structural information to downstream AI detection models, while higher-level decision layers can combine findings across individual frames, scans, and anatomical views. The patent filing also addresses adaptive workflow control, including scan ordering and early stopping, as well as self-supervised approaches that use large volumes of unlabeled ultrasound data to support scalable AI development.
Patent Estate Covers Hardware, AI and Clinical Workflow
RIVANNA’s intellectual-property strategy extends beyond individual algorithms to protect an integrated medical imaging technology stack. According to the company, its patent portfolio covers AI and machine learning, cloud-based analytics, robotics and automation, image processing and workflow, hardware, and interfaces. This includes proprietary ultrasound hardware, AI technologies such as BoneEnhance and CADe/x, spine-recognition technology associated with SpineNav-AI, and procedural infrastructure including SafeTrack instrument tracking and acquisition standardization. The company said its integrated architecture allows foundational intellectual property to support multiple clinical applications without rebuilding the underlying technology for every indication. RIVANNA currently has two FDA 510(k)-cleared product lines: Accuro 3S, cleared for guidance for needle or catheter placement, and Accuro XV, cleared for musculoskeletal imaging. The company is developing additional AI-enabled capabilities for Accuro XV, including machine-learning technology for musculoskeletal anatomy visualization and computer-aided fracture detection.
Clinical Development Supports Point-of-Care Imaging
Alongside its patent expansion, RIVANNA is advancing clinical evaluation of its ultrasound technology. The company reported that its Accuro XV multi-site clinical study expanded from two to eight academic medical centers, with 10 systems deployed and more than 1,800 patients enrolled. A 2026 peer-reviewed multicenter study published in the Journal of Emergency Medicine evaluated extremity imaging performed by non-physician operators at UVA Health and UT Southwestern Medical Center. According to RIVANNA, more than 90% of scans were rated adequate for diagnostic interpretation, while image-quality scores were statistically indistinguishable from those obtained by board-certified emergency physicians in the reported comparison.
RIVANNA is headquartered in Charlottesville, Virginia, and operates an FDA-registered, ISO 13485:2016-certified manufacturing facility. Its technology portfolio is focused on point-of-care ultrasound, AI-enabled clinical decision support, interventional guidance, and trauma triage. The company’s latest patent milestone adds further intellectual-property protection around its AI-enabled ultrasound platform as it continues developing applications across clinical imaging and decision-support workflows.
