TORONTO, Ontario, June 30, 2026
Apotex Health Corp. announced that Health Canada has approved SEVMIA™ (semaglutide injection), making it the first generic equivalent of Wegovy® authorized in Canada for chronic weight management in adults. The approval marks another milestone in Apotex’s strategy to improve access to affordable medicines and follows the recent authorization of Apo Semaglutide Injection™ for type 2 diabetes. Developed in partnership with Orbicular Pharmaceutical Technologies, SEVMIA™ is supplied as a multi-use pre-filled pen delivering 1 mg doses and expands the company’s growing portfolio of generic and innovative therapies targeting metabolic diseases. The approval reinforces Apotex’s commitment to delivering high-quality, cost-effective treatment options for Canadians facing obesity and related cardiovascular risks.
SEVMIA™ Expands Affordable Access to Chronic Weight Management
SEVMIA™ is indicated in Canada as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management in adults with obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m²) or those who are overweight (BMI ≥27 kg/m²) with at least one weight-related comorbidity. The therapy is also approved to reduce the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction in adults with established cardiovascular disease and a BMI of 27 kg/m² or greater. By introducing the first generic version of semaglutide for chronic weight management, Apotex aims to improve treatment accessibility while helping address one of Canada’s fastest-growing chronic health challenges. Company executives stated that expanding affordable access to evidence-based obesity treatments can contribute to better long-term patient outcomes and support the sustainability of the Canadian healthcare system.
Partnership Strengthens Generic Semaglutide Development
The approval of SEVMIA™ resulted from a strategic collaboration between Apotex and Orbicular Pharmaceutical Technologies, combining expertise in peptide drug development and pharmaceutical manufacturing. According to the companies, the approval reflects the scientific rigor applied throughout development to meet Health Canada’s regulatory standards for quality, safety, and efficacy. Martin Arès, President of Apotex Canada, said the approval aligns with the company’s more than five decades of commitment to improving access to affordable medicines while expanding treatment options in areas of growing patient need. Dr. M. S. Mohan, Managing Director of Orbicular Pharmaceutical Technologies, added that the approval highlights the strength of the company’s peptide development platform and its successful collaboration with Apotex in advancing complex generic medicines.
Apotex Continues Expanding Its Generic Medicine Portfolio
The approval of SEVMIA™ further strengthens Apotex’s position as the largest Canadian-based pharmaceutical company and reinforces its focus on expanding access to generic, biosimilar, and innovative branded medicines across multiple therapeutic areas. With obesity affecting millions of Canadians and placing increasing pressure on healthcare systems, affordable treatment alternatives are expected to play an important role in improving disease management and reducing long-term healthcare costs. Apotex stated that it remains committed to developing trusted, high-quality medicines that improve patient access while supporting healthcare providers with effective therapeutic options. The addition of SEVMIA™ complements the company’s expanding semaglutide portfolio and underscores its long-term strategy of addressing significant unmet medical needs through affordable pharmaceutical innovation.
