Persephoni BioSciences has announced a strategic investment in SelSym Biotech, bringing the preclinical-stage biotechnology company into its Clinical Impact Studio to accelerate development of SymClot, a first-in-class, blood-type-agnostic, shelf-stable hemostatic therapy designed to control life-threatening bleeding at the point of injury. The partnership represents SelSym Biotech’s first equity financing and is intended to advance the company’s lead trauma care program toward clinical development by combining Persephoni’s venture creation platform, regulatory expertise, scientific infrastructure, and operational capabilities with SelSym’s innovative biomaterials technology. Hemorrhage remains one of the leading causes of preventable trauma-related deaths worldwide, particularly in pre-hospital and emergency settings where access to compatible blood products is often limited. By developing a therapy that eliminates the need for blood-type matching while remaining stable outside conventional blood storage conditions, SelSym aims to transform emergency bleeding management for civilian trauma care, military medicine, emergency responders, and disaster relief operations. SymClot Designed to Deliver Rapid Hemostasis Anywhere
SelSym Biotech’s lead investigational product, SymClot, is an injectable platelet-mimetic biomaterials therapy inspired by the biological function of natural human platelets, which play a central role in stopping bleeding following injury. Unlike donated platelets that require blood typing, have a limited storage life, and depend on continuous donor availability, SymClot has been engineered to provide a shelf-stable, blood-type-independent alternative capable of being deployed wherever traumatic injuries occur. The technology is designed to integrate seamlessly into existing hospital transfusion protocols while significantly expanding access to rapid bleeding control in environments where conventional platelet transfusions are unavailable or impractical. Developed from research conducted in Dr. Ashley Brown’s Advanced Wound Healing Laboratory at North Carolina State University, the technology has demonstrated encouraging efficacy in both small animal (mouse and rat) and large animal (pig) trauma models, with findings published in leading peer-reviewed scientific journals. These promising preclinical data provide a strong scientific foundation supporting continued product development toward human clinical evaluation.
