Marengo Therapeutics has announced a major advancement in its strategic TriSTAR™ collaboration with Ipsen, nominating the first drug development candidate under the partnership for IND-enabling development while simultaneously strengthening its scientific leadership with the appointment of Saso Cemerski, Ph.D., as Senior Vice President and Head of Immunology. The milestone marks the successful progression of the first therapeutic program developed through the collaboration established between Marengo Therapeutics and Ipsen in 2024, highlighting continued progress in the development of next-generation precision immunotherapies targeting cancer and autoimmune diseases. The nominated candidate represents the second TriSTAR-derived therapy to advance into IND-enabling development and reinforces the platform’s ability to generate differentiated trispecific T-cell engager (TCE) candidates for global clinical development. The announcement reflects Marengo’s strategy of combining innovative immuno-oncology science with strategic pharmaceutical partnerships to accelerate the development of transformative cancer therapies.
TriSTAR Platform Advances Precision T-Cell Engager Development
The newly nominated development candidate is built on Marengo’s proprietary TriSTAR™ platform, a precision trispecific T-cell engager technology designed to selectively activate and redirect immune cells against tumors. Unlike conventional CD3-directed T-cell engagers, the TriSTAR platform incorporates a differentiated two-in-one mechanism of action that combines selective Vβ-directed T-cell activation, built-in costimulation, and tumor-targeted engagement within a single therapeutic molecule. This innovative approach is designed to generate highly active memory T cells capable of recognizing and eliminating tumor cells while minimizing the broad, non-specific immune activation associated with traditional T-cell engager therapies. According to the company, this precision strategy has the potential to improve the therapeutic index, enhance anti-tumor efficacy in solid tumors, and reduce treatment-related toxicities. Under the collaboration agreement, Marengo has led research and preclinical development activities and remains eligible for milestone payments, while Ipsen will assume responsibility for all subsequent development following the successful candidate nomination.
Scientific Leadership Expansion Strengthens Immunotherapy Pipeline
Complementing the platform milestone, Marengo Therapeutics has appointed Saso Cemerski, Ph.D., a recognized leader in T-cell engager discovery and immune-cell activation, as Senior Vice President and Head of Immunology. Dr. Cemerski brings more than 15 years of immunology and therapeutic discovery experience, most recently serving as Head of Discovery Immune Cell Engagement at AstraZeneca, where he led a global research organization focused on advancing multiple immune-oncology programs toward clinical development. His previous leadership roles at Cue Biopharma, Merck, Bristol Myers Squibb, and Xencor further strengthen Marengo’s scientific capabilities. In his new position, Dr. Cemerski will oversee immunology research across the company’s clinical and preclinical pipeline, guide scientific strategy, and accelerate development of Marengo’s precision Vβ-directed T-cell engager portfolio. Company leadership believes his expertise in antibody engineering and immune-cell biology will play a key role in expanding one of the industry’s most differentiated immunotherapy pipelines.
Strategic Collaboration Supports Next-Generation Cancer Therapies
The latest milestones demonstrate continued momentum for the Marengo-Ipsen strategic alliance and validate the company’s broader vision of advancing precision immuno-oncology through innovative T-cell engineering technologies. Marengo’s proprietary platforms—including STAR™, TriSTAR™, and MSTAR™—are designed to selectively target specific T-cell populations within the immune system to create more precise and durable anti-cancer responses. By leveraging strategic collaborations with global pharmaceutical companies such as Ipsen, Marengo aims to accelerate the translation of cutting-edge immunology research into novel therapies capable of addressing significant unmet needs across oncology and autoimmune diseases. As the immunotherapy landscape continues to evolve beyond traditional checkpoint inhibitors and first-generation T-cell engagers, precision approaches such as TriSTAR may provide new opportunities to improve treatment effectiveness while enhancing patient safety. The advancement of the first partnered TriSTAR candidate into IND-enabling development marks an important step toward expanding the next generation of targeted immunotherapies for patients worldwide.
