IceCure Medical Ltd., a developer of minimally invasive cryoablation technology for tumor treatment, has highlighted two new peer-reviewed publications examining the expanding role of cryoablation in breast cancer treatment. The publications discuss the potential of cryoablation as part of breast cancer treatment de-escalation, including evidence surrounding the company’s ProSense® system and clinical applications involving axillary lymph node metastases. The findings add to the growing body of clinical literature examining minimally invasive alternatives to traditional surgical tumor removal and could support continued evaluation of cryoablation in selected breast cancer patients.
Peer-Reviewed Review Examines Breast Cancer De-Escalation
The first publication, titled “Cryoablation within the Evolving Paradigm of Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Treatment De-Escalation,” was published in Clinical Breast Cancer. The review examines available clinical evidence, procedural considerations, and the potential role of breast cryoablation within a broader shift toward less intensive cancer treatment approaches. Treatment de-escalation seeks to reduce the burden of therapy while maintaining appropriate safety and effectiveness outcomes for carefully selected patients. The review highlights the U.S. FDA marketing authorization of ProSense® for selected early-stage, low-risk breast cancers in women aged 70 and older. It also discusses updated guidance from the American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS) and results from the five-year ICE3 clinical study. IceCure reported a 3.1% ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence rate in the five-year ICE3 follow-up. The company also continues to evaluate ProSense® through studies including the ChoICE post-marketing trial, adding further clinical evidence to the development of cryoablation as a breast cancer treatment option.
Cryoablation Expands to Axillary Lymph Node Disease
The second publication, titled “Cryoablation of Axillary Lymph Node Metastases for the Curative and Palliative Treatment of Breast Cancer,” was published in the Journal of Breast Imaging. The article provides practical guidance on the potential use of cryoablation for axillary lymph node metastases, broadening the clinical discussion beyond treatment of the primary breast tumor. According to the publication highlighted by IceCure, cryoablation may be considered for patients who are poor surgical candidates or decline surgery. The authors describe the procedure as having the potential for high technical success and low complication rates in appropriate settings.
