Helix has announced a multi-year strategic agreement with AstraZeneca to accelerate genomic research, precision medicine, and drug discovery through access to Helix’s GenoSphere™ clinico-genomic cohorts. Under the collaboration, AstraZeneca will utilize Helix’s continuously expanding, deeply phenotyped datasets that integrate Exome+® genomic sequencing with extensive longitudinal electronic health record (EHR) data, supporting the identification of novel therapeutic targets and advancing the development of precision medicines across multiple disease areas. The agreement highlights the growing importance of large-scale genomic datasets in pharmaceutical research, enabling researchers to generate deeper biological insights while accelerating every stage of therapeutic development. Powered by the Helix Research Network®, recognized as the largest and fastest-growing precision health network in North America, the collaboration is expected to strengthen genomic-driven innovation in areas including cardiometabolic, respiratory, autoimmune, and other complex diseases, reinforcing the expanding role of integrated genomic intelligence in modern pharmaceutical research.
GenoSphere™ Cohorts Strengthen Precision Medicine Research
At the center of the collaboration are Helix’s GenoSphere™ cohorts, which combine comprehensive Exome+® genomic sequencing with curated longitudinal clinical data collected from fully consented participants. The datasets include an average of 13 years of electronic health record history, incorporating diagnoses, laboratory results, treatment pathways, and ongoing clinical updates that enable researchers to better understand disease progression and therapeutic response over time.
Unlike traditional genomic databases, the Helix platform allows researchers to rapidly launch targeted follow-on studies using participants who have provided consent for future research, significantly improving the efficiency of translational medicine and biomarker discovery. By integrating high-quality genomic information with real-world clinical evidence, the collaboration provides AstraZeneca with a robust resource to accelerate target validation, biomarker identification, patient stratification, and precision drug development across diverse therapeutic areas.
Strategic Collaboration Accelerates Drug Discovery Innovation
The partnership reflects the pharmaceutical industry’s increasing investment in genomics, artificial intelligence, and real-world clinical data to improve research productivity and develop more personalized therapies. According to Dr. James Lu, Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of Helix, combining comprehensive genomic sequencing with rich clinical information creates a foundational resource capable of accelerating biomedical discovery while supporting the development of more targeted medicines. The collaboration enables AstraZeneca to leverage one of North America’s largest precision health ecosystems to generate actionable insights that may improve clinical trial design, optimize patient selection, and identify novel therapeutic opportunities.
As precision medicine continues transforming pharmaceutical research, access to integrated clinico-genomic datasets is becoming increasingly critical for reducing development timelines and improving clinical success rates. The agreement also reinforces Helix’s leadership in enterprise genomics by expanding its role as a trusted research partner for global biopharmaceutical companies seeking scalable genomic solutions. Through this multi-year collaboration, Helix and AstraZeneca aim to accelerate scientific discovery, deepen understanding of complex diseases, and support the development of innovative therapies that improve patient outcomes while advancing the future of genomics-driven drug discovery and precision healthcare.
