CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts, U.S., October 29, 2026
Flagship Pioneering has announced the formation of Etcelera, a biotechnology company designed to advance artificial intelligence (AI)-powered drug discovery by combining three scientific platforms developed by Cellarity, Etiome and Empress Therapeutics. The new company aims to improve understanding of disease mechanisms through causal intelligence in human biology, helping researchers identify the biological processes that drive disease and predict how potential medicines may behave before entering clinical development. Etcelera integrates high-resolution human transcriptomic data, advanced chemoproteomics, large-scale biological perturbation data and Flagship Pioneering’s proprietary AI capabilities. The company will use this integrated platform to identify new therapeutic targets and discover small-molecule drug candidates across several disease areas. Ad Rawcliffe, an experienced biotechnology executive and company builder, has been appointed Chief Executive Officer to lead the newly established organization. The launch represents Flagship Pioneering’s latest effort to combine advanced computational biology and experimental research to address challenges in pharmaceutical research and development.
Etcelera Combines Three Drug Discovery Platforms
Etcelera brings together the complementary technologies of Cellarity, Etiome and Empress Therapeutics, each of which was originally developed within Flagship Pioneering’s innovation ecosystem. Cellarity contributed its platform for understanding and analyzing the biological state of entire cells, using high-resolution transcriptomic information to identify changes associated with disease. Its approach focuses on understanding how cellular states influence disease development and identifying mechanisms that could potentially be modified through treatment. Etiome contributes temporal disease-stage intelligence, designed to investigate how biological processes change over time and identify when particular interventions may be most effective. Empress Therapeutics adds its industrialized multi-omics and chemoproteomics capabilities, supporting the identification and validation of molecular targets and disease mechanisms. By combining these technologies, Etcelera aims to understand the relationships between biological changes and disease outcomes rather than relying solely on statistical associations. The company says its integrated platform incorporates more than 20 years of combined data, including a foundation model trained on information from approximately 150 million cells, alongside more than 30 proprietary AI-powered prediction models. These resources are intended to support target discovery, biological validation and small-molecule development.
AI Platform Targets Hematology, Metabolism and Immunology
At launch, Etcelera’s research programmes focus on three major therapeutic areas: hematology, metabolism and immunology. Its hematology portfolio includes programmes targeting myelofibrosis and essential thrombocythemia, two blood disorders associated with abnormal bone marrow and blood-cell production. In metabolism, the company is advancing partnered programmes involving metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), a serious liver disease associated with metabolic dysfunction and inflammation. The platform also supports early-stage research in immunology, where understanding the interactions between different immune-cell populations may help identify new therapeutic opportunities. Etcelera will combine experimental biological data with computational models to investigate disease-associated pathways and evaluate potential drug targets. Flagship Pioneering stated that the integrated approach is intended to improve the probability of clinical success by identifying disease mechanisms more accurately before candidates enter human studies. However, these expectations remain a development objective and will require validation through experimental research and clinical trials. The company is also building on a previous Cellarity collaboration with Novo Nordisk involving a programme in MASH. A separate clinical-stage sickle cell disease programme, CLY-124, discovered through Cellarity’s research, will continue to advance through a dedicated asset company rather than becoming part of Etcelera’s active pipeline.
Ad Rawcliffe to Lead the New Biotechnology Company
Ad Rawcliffe will lead Etcelera as CEO, bringing experience in biotechnology leadership and pharmaceutical development. Noubar Afeyan, Ph.D., Founder and CEO of Flagship Pioneering and Co-Founder of Etcelera, said the combination of the three platforms and Flagship’s internal AI capabilities creates an opportunity to address important challenges in drug discovery. Alec Reynolds, Chairman of Etcelera and Senior Partner at Flagship Pioneering, highlighted the industry’s need for better biological understanding to reduce failures during clinical development. Rawcliffe said the company’s objective is to understand cause-and-effect relationships in human biology and translate that knowledge into improved medicines, partnerships and data services. Etcelera is based in Somerville, Massachusetts, and will operate as a Flagship Pioneering company. Its business strategy includes advancing internal drug development programmes while making its technology and scientific capabilities available through collaborations with pharmaceutical and biotechnology partners.
The formation of Etcelera highlights the growing role of AI, multi-omics research and causal biology in pharmaceutical innovation. By integrating experimental data with computational prediction tools, the company aims to improve how researchers identify targets and prioritize drug candidates. The real value of this approach will ultimately depend on the quality of its scientific predictions, experimental validation and clinical outcomes. Etcelera’s progress across hematology, metabolism and immunology will be important in assessing whether its integrated platform can translate advanced biological insights into effective new medicines.
