Mesa, Arizona, U.S., September 14, 2026
Bright Path Labs, a U.S.-based pharmaceutical manufacturer, announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted the company an Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT) designation covering its production technology for carboplatin and lidocaine, two medicines listed on the FDA drug shortage list. The designation, issued on August 11, marks the first AMT designation for a small-molecule drug manufacturing technology, according to the company. Bright Path’s platform is designed to manufacture medicines entirely in the United States, from key starting materials through active pharmaceutical ingredients, sterile fill-finish and packaging. The development represents an important step in efforts to strengthen the U.S. pharmaceutical supply chain, increase domestic manufacturing capacity and address vulnerabilities associated with dependence on overseas sources.
FDA AMT Designation Supports Advanced Manufacturing
The FDA’s Advanced Manufacturing Technology program was established to encourage adoption of innovative manufacturing technologies that can strengthen the pharmaceutical supply chain and improve the availability of critical medicines. An AMT designation can provide enhanced opportunities for interaction between manufacturers and the FDA regarding applications that use the designated technology, potentially supporting more efficient development and regulatory pathways. Bright Path received the designation for its patented Spinning Tube-in-Tube (STT®) reactor system, combined with software-controlled production and a robotic sterile filling line. Unlike conventional pharmaceutical manufacturing, which typically relies on discrete production batches, the Bright Path platform is designed to convert chemical starting materials into finished pharmaceutical products through a more continuous manufacturing process. According to Bright Path, its technology has demonstrated average yields 178% higher than conventional batch manufacturing. The company says the process can transform base chemical materials into finished medicine in hours rather than the days or weeks associated with traditional batch production. These manufacturing characteristics are intended to support greater production flexibility while reducing potential supply-chain vulnerabilities. The FDA designation is particularly relevant to carboplatin and lidocaine, both of which are widely used in healthcare and have appeared on the FDA’s drug shortage list. Carboplatin is an important chemotherapy medicine used across multiple cancer indications, while lidocaine is a widely used local anesthetic in hospitals and emergency care.
U.S. Manufacturing Targets Drug Shortages
Bright Path’s manufacturing strategy is focused on producing medicines entirely within the United States, including the chemical ingredients required for pharmaceutical production. The company said its manufacturing platform does not rely on overseas-sourced chemical ingredients for the two initial medicines covered by the AMT designation. The announcement comes amid broader efforts to strengthen domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing and reduce vulnerabilities in the global medicine supply chain. According to information cited by Bright Path from the U.S. Pharmacopeia’s Medicine Supply Map, a substantial proportion of key starting materials used in U.S.-approved medicines are sourced from a single country, creating potential vulnerabilities when geopolitical, logistical or manufacturing disruptions occur. Bright Path’s initial production of carboplatin and lidocaine is already committed under contracts with healthcare customers through a distribution network reaching 48 U.S. states. The company expects its first shipments to begin in early 2027, subject to the applicable manufacturing and regulatory requirements. The company also developed its manufacturing technology through the DARPA EQUIP-A-Pharma program, supported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Bright Path participates in the FDA’s Emerging Technology Program, providing additional regulatory engagement around its advanced manufacturing platform.
Continuous Manufacturing Could Reshape Supply Security
The AMT designation highlights the increasing role of advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing technologies in addressing drug shortages and improving supply resilience. Continuous and automated production can potentially allow manufacturers to respond more rapidly to changes in demand while reducing reliance on large, inflexible production batches. Bright Path said its platform can ultimately address a broad range of essential medicines and plans to expand its Mesa, Arizona operation into a network of regional manufacturing hubs serving hospitals, distributors and government customers. For the pharmaceutical industry, the FDA designation represents an important regulatory milestone for continuous manufacturing, domestic drug production and supply-chain resilience. It also demonstrates how manufacturing innovation is becoming increasingly important alongside drug discovery and clinical development in ensuring reliable access to essential medicines. The designation itself does not mean that every medicine manufactured using the technology is automatically FDA-approved. Each pharmaceutical product must continue to meet applicable quality, manufacturing, regulatory and approval requirements. Nevertheless, the recognition of Bright Path’s manufacturing technology through the FDA’s AMT pathway represents a significant development in the modernization of U.S. pharmaceutical manufacturing and efforts to improve the availability of critical medicines.
