INGELHEIM, Germany — September 17, 2026
Boehringer Ingelheim announced the launch of PED Essentials, a free online learning hub designed to help patient organizations generate, analyze and communicate high-quality patient experience data (PED). PED captures direct insights from patients regarding symptoms, quality of life, treatment preferences and unmet needs, providing an evidence source that can complement clinical and scientific information. The new platform was co-created with patient experts and subject-matter specialists to provide foundational knowledge and practical learning resources. Boehringer Ingelheim said the initiative forms part of its broader integrated-evidence strategy, with the goal of strengthening the role of patient perspectives in healthcare decision-making and supporting the development of solutions that better reflect patient needs.
PED Essentials Strengthens Evidence-Based Patient Advocacy
PED Essentials is designed to help patient organizations turn lived experiences into structured evidence that can support advocacy and healthcare decisions. The platform addresses gaps identified by patient delegates during Boehringer Ingelheim’s 2023 Global Patient Partnership Summit, where participants highlighted limited confidence in generating, analyzing and submitting high-quality PED, as well as fragmented access to existing educational resources. The company subsequently partnered with patient experts to develop the PED Resource Finder before working with Patvocates, a patient-led consultancy, to create the new interactive learning platform. Surveys, a patient-led steering committee and an editorial board of community experts contributed to the development process. The resulting resource is intended to help patient organizations better understand how patient evidence can be generated and communicated while supporting more structured participation in healthcare discussions.
Regulatory Recognition of Patient Experience Data Grows
The launch comes as regulators, health technology assessment (HTA) bodies and payers increasingly recognize patient experience and preference information as relevant evidence. The European Medicines Agency published a landmark reflection paper on patient experience data in September 2025, with final guidance expected as the agency progresses its work. In the United States, the FDA continues advancing its Patient-Focused Drug Development activities and guidance concerning patient experience and preference information in regulatory decision-making. Organizations including the UK’s NICE and Canada’s CDA-AMC are also incorporating patient evidence into aspects of HTA and reimbursement assessment. These developments are increasing the importance of robustly generated patient insights for organizations seeking to influence healthcare policy, regulatory discussions, value assessments and access decisions. PED Essentials is positioned by Boehringer Ingelheim as an educational resource supporting patient communities as these evidence frameworks continue to evolve.
Boehringer Ingelheim Advances Patient-Powered Healthcare
PED Essentials expands Boehringer Ingelheim’s patient-engagement strategy by providing a dedicated educational infrastructure for patient organizations and advocates. The initiative builds on the company’s Real Voices, Better Choices whitepaper, which was developed with patient experts to promote more formal patient participation in healthcare decision-making. Through PED Essentials, Boehringer aims to make foundational PED knowledge more accessible while helping communities transform individual experiences and patient priorities into evidence that can be shared with healthcare stakeholders. The company views stronger patient-generated evidence as an important component of its approach to medicine development and healthcare innovation. With the new platform launched globally and regulatory attention to patient experience continuing to expand, Boehringer Ingelheim is strengthening the infrastructure through which patient perspectives can contribute to evidence-based healthcare decisions.
