HONG KONG, July 2, 2026
CSPC Pharmaceutical Group Limited has announced a strategic collaboration, option and license agreement with AstraZeneca to accelerate the discovery and development of next-generation small interfering RNA (siRNA) therapeutics for renal diseases. The agreement combines CSPC’s proprietary AI-powered siRNA drug discovery platform and extrahepatic targeted delivery technology with AstraZeneca’s global drug development expertise, marking a significant step in advancing innovative RNA-based medicines. Under the collaboration, both companies will jointly identify and develop preclinical candidates targeting kidney diseases across multiple indications, reinforcing the growing role of artificial intelligence, precision medicine, and RNA therapeutics in modern biopharmaceutical research. The agreement also includes substantial financial milestones and commercialization opportunities, highlighting the strategic importance of this partnership for the future of nucleic acid drug development.
AI-Powered siRNA Platform to Accelerate Drug Discovery
The collaboration will leverage CSPC Pharmaceutical Group’s proprietary siRNA discovery platform, which integrates an AI molecular design model with a fully automated high-throughput screening system capable of rapidly identifying highly active nucleic acid drug candidates with improved extrahepatic tissue targeting. These advanced technologies are designed to overcome traditional challenges associated with RNA therapeutics by enhancing both molecular efficiency and tissue-specific delivery beyond the liver. Through the agreement, CSPC and AstraZeneca will jointly discover and optimize preclinical candidates for two therapeutic targets focused on treating renal diseases, an area with significant unmet medical need.
Following successful preclinical development, AstraZeneca will hold exclusive options to obtain worldwide or ex-China development, manufacturing, and commercialization rights, while CSPC will retain commercialization rights within China for one of the programs. This collaborative model enables both organizations to capitalize on their respective scientific strengths while accelerating the translation of innovative RNA technologies into potential future medicines.
Strategic Partnership Brings Significant Financial Potential
The agreement demonstrates the increasing value of RNA-based drug discovery partnerships within the global biopharmaceutical industry. Under its financial terms, CSPC Pharmaceutical Group will receive an upfront payment of US$30 million, with eligibility for up to US$540 million in development milestone payments and as much as US$1.2 billion in commercial sales milestone payments, in addition to potential single-digit royalties based on annual net product sales.
These milestone-based payments reflect the long-term commercial potential of successfully developed siRNA therapies while supporting continued investment in innovative drug discovery technologies. The partnership also illustrates how leading pharmaceutical companies are increasingly seeking external innovation through strategic alliances that combine cutting-edge biotechnology platforms with global clinical development capabilities.
Collaboration Strengthens Innovation in RNA Therapeutics
The new collaboration further strengthens the rapidly expanding field of RNA therapeutics, which has become one of the most promising areas of pharmaceutical innovation. By combining CSPC’s AI-enabled siRNA discovery technologies with AstraZeneca’s extensive global development infrastructure, the companies aim to accelerate the advancement of novel treatments for renal diseases while establishing a foundation for future RNA-based therapeutic programs. The integration of artificial intelligence, automated screening, and advanced delivery platforms is expected to improve both the speed and precision of identifying high-quality drug candidates, reducing development timelines and increasing the likelihood of clinical success. As investment in precision medicine and gene-silencing technologies continues to grow, this strategic alliance positions both organizations to contribute significantly to the next generation of targeted therapies. The collaboration also reflects the pharmaceutical industry’s broader shift toward technology-enabled drug discovery platforms capable of addressing complex diseases with greater specificity and improved patient outcomes, reinforcing the strategic importance of RNA therapeutics within the global biopharmaceutical landscape.
