BioArctic AB and Mesenkia Therapeutics have entered a research collaboration to explore a novel antibody-based therapeutic approach for glioblastoma, an aggressive and treatment-resistant brain cancer. The collaboration combines BioArctic’s proprietary BrainTransporter™ technology with an antibody developed using Mesenkia’s KITAIbodies® platform, with the goal of addressing challenges associated with delivering large therapeutic molecules into the brain. The companies plan to generate a novel drug candidate and conduct preclinical studies to evaluate the approach.
BrainTransporter Technology Meets Tumor-Targeting Antibody
Under the agreement, BioArctic will combine its BrainTransporter technology with Mesenkia’s antibody, which targets HVEM (herpes virus entry mediator), a protein found on the surface of certain glioblastoma tumor cells, including tumor stem cells. Tumor stem cells are considered an important area of investigation because of their potential contribution to tumor recurrence and treatment resistance. The collaboration is designed to bring together complementary scientific capabilities. BioArctic has expertise in pharmaceutical development and technologies intended to improve the delivery of biological medicines across the blood-brain barrier, while Mesenkia has developed antibody discovery capabilities focused on glioblastoma. By combining these approaches, the companies aim to investigate whether targeted delivery can improve access to tumor cells within the brain. BioArctic will initially be responsible for generating the combined drug candidate. Following candidate generation, the companies intend to conduct preclinical studies to validate the concept. Decisions regarding further development will depend on the results of these studies. The program is therefore currently at an early research stage, and no conclusions regarding clinical safety or efficacy can yet be made.
New Approach Addresses Glioblastoma Treatment Challenges
Glioblastoma remains one of the most difficult cancers to treat, with limited therapeutic options and significant challenges associated with delivering medicines throughout the brain. The blood-brain barrier can restrict the movement of many large therapeutic molecules from the bloodstream into brain tissue, creating a major obstacle for antibody-based treatments. BioArctic’s BrainTransporter platform is designed to actively transport antibodies across the blood-brain barrier. The company has previously developed the technology as part of its research into neurodegenerative diseases and is now exploring its potential application in oncology through the collaboration with Mesenkia. The partners believe that combining BrainTransporter with an antibody directed against HVEM-positive glioblastoma cells could provide a new strategy for addressing disease-driving tumor populations. Mesenkia’s KITAIbodies platform is being used to develop antibody candidates, while BioArctic contributes its brain-delivery technology and pharmaceutical development expertise. The collaboration marks an expansion of BioArctic’s BrainTransporter pipeline beyond its established focus on neurodegenerative diseases. It also provides Mesenkia with an opportunity to advance its antibody technology through collaboration with a company experienced in brain-targeted drug delivery.
Preclinical Studies Will Guide Future Development
The next stage of the collaboration will focus on preclinical validation of the combined approach. These studies are expected to assess whether the resulting candidate can effectively address the biological targets underlying the companies’ therapeutic hypothesis and provide sufficient evidence to support decisions about further development. For patients with glioblastoma, new treatment strategies remain an important scientific priority because the disease is highly aggressive and can be difficult to control with existing approaches. Targeting tumor cells while overcoming the brain’s delivery barriers represents a potentially important direction for research. BioArctic and Mesenkia emphasized that the agreement is an initial research collaboration, with future development dependent on preclinical findings. If the concept is successfully validated, the program could provide a foundation for additional development toward clinical testing. The partnership therefore represents an early but notable step in combining antibody engineering, brain drug delivery and precision oncology to investigate new therapeutic possibilities for glioblastoma.
