Aignostics has launched PathoSearch, a new AI-powered visual search engine for pathology cases, through an early-access program designed to help pathologists rapidly find diagnosed cases with similar tissue morphology. The technology allows users to submit a screenshot of a region of interest from an H&E-stained pathology slide and retrieve morphologically similar reference cases from a large, multi-center database. By providing immediate access to comparable cases, PathoSearch aims to support the evaluation of difficult and rare pathology cases and help researchers and pathologists develop more informed differential assessments. The new platform represents another development in the growing use of artificial intelligence, digital pathology and pathology foundation models in precision medicine and biomedical research.
AI-Powered Search for Complex Pathology Cases
PathoSearch is designed around the idea that visual similarity can accelerate pathology research and case evaluation. Instead of relying exclusively on textbooks, conventional databases or external consultations, users can upload a relevant image and search for cases with comparable morphological characteristics. Aignostics says this approach is particularly valuable for rare and complex cases, which can represent a significant portion of pathology workloads. The platform returns reference cases that are linked to real diagnosed cases, allowing users to inspect the underlying information and compare the findings with the tissue image under evaluation. The company says its reference cases are annotated and validated by pathologists, with many also supported by molecular testing, adding additional scientific context to the search results. The technology is powered by embeddings generated from Atlas 2, Aignostics’ pathology foundation model co-developed with Mayo Clinic. The model enables PathoSearch to analyze tissue morphology and identify relevant similarities across a large pathology dataset. At the early-access stage, the database includes more than 310,000 whole-slide images from over 35,000 cases, covering more than 300 diagnostic entities and 27 organs. The current coverage focuses on several major organ groups, including thoracic, digestive, soft tissue and bone, female genital, and urinary and male genital pathology, with expansion planned toward broader coverage of malignancies classified under the World Health Organization’s tumor classification system.
Expanding Digital Pathology and Precision Medicine
Aignostics is also expanding PathoSearch beyond a standalone research platform by integrating it with existing digital pathology image management systems. The company announced that the first integration is live on Techcyte Fusion AP, allowing pathologists using the system to access PathoSearch within their existing workflow. Aignostics expects the reference database to grow to more than one million whole-slide images when the platform reaches general availability, potentially creating a large resource for pathology research and case comparison. The launch reflects the broader role of AI in pathology and precision medicine, where computational analysis of tissue images is increasingly being used to generate insights for biomedical research and drug development. Aignostics develops AI-powered tissue-analysis technologies and says its products and services support biopharma research and development as well as clinical pathology applications. The company was established in 2020 as a spin-off from Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and operates in Berlin and New York. PathoSearch is currently free during early access, giving eligible users an opportunity to explore its image-based pathology search capabilities. Importantly, Aignostics states that the platform is intended for research use only and is not for use in diagnostic procedures. This distinction positions the initial release primarily as a research and scientific-support technology while the company continues to expand its pathology data resources and AI capabilities.
