Copenhagen, Denmark, November 3, 2026
AGC Biologics has expanded its long-term manufacturing partnership with an unnamed global pharmaceutical company through a major dual-site agreement valued at more than €0.5 billion. The expanded collaboration adds six commercial biologics manufacturing programs at AGC Biologics’ Copenhagen facility in Denmark, building on an existing agreement covering five commercial programs at its Yokohama facility in Japan. The partnership represents a significant development in the global biopharmaceutical contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) sector, highlighting increasing demand for flexible manufacturing capacity, geographic diversification and reliable biologics supply chains. Under the agreement, AGC Biologics will provide drug substance manufacturing services covering process transfer, scale-up, validation and commercial production. By operating manufacturing facilities across two continents as an integrated supply network, the companies aim to improve production flexibility and strengthen the global supply of commercial biologic medicines.
AGC Biologics Expands Dual-Site Manufacturing Agreement
The expanded agreement builds on a previously announced long-term manufacturing partnership established for AGC Biologics’ Yokohama facility in Japan. The original arrangement covered five commercial biologics programs, with the customer selecting the facility as a manufacturing partner for its global product supply requirements. The latest expansion introduces another six commercial biologics programs at the company’s Copenhagen site, bringing the total number of programs covered by the dual-site arrangement to 11. The Copenhagen manufacturing operations will support multiple biologics through a comprehensive range of services, including technology transfer, process scale-up, validation and commercial drug substance manufacturing. The products will be developed and manufactured through coordinated operations across the two locations, supported by several dual regulatory submissions. This arrangement is designed to allow products to launch and move between facilities as manufacturing requirements, market demand and production capacity change. AGC Biologics has not publicly identified the pharmaceutical customer or disclosed the individual biologic products included in the agreement. The total value of the expanded manufacturing commitment now exceeds €500 million, demonstrating the scale of the long-term commercial relationship and the growing importance of global outsourcing partnerships in biopharmaceutical manufacturing.
Copenhagen Facility Strengthens Commercial Biologics Capacity
The expanded partnership highlights the capabilities of AGC Biologics’ Copenhagen manufacturing facility, which has extensive experience in biologics development and GMP manufacturing. The company reports that its Copenhagen site has approximately 25 years of expertise in drug substance development and commercial production. Customers using the facility have collectively received more than 50 commercial approvals from over 20 regulatory agencies. The site’s 2024 expansion added approximately 18,000 square meters of manufacturing, quality control laboratory, technical and warehouse infrastructure. Its manufacturing capabilities include eight 2,000-liter single-use bioreactor production lines, one 500-liter perfusion bioreactor and two downstream purification lines. These capabilities support large-scale mammalian cell culture manufacturing and the production of complex therapeutic proteins. Single-use bioreactor technology is increasingly important in modern biopharmaceutical manufacturing because it can support flexible production configurations and reduce the need for certain cleaning and sterilization activities associated with traditional stainless-steel systems. For pharmaceutical companies managing multiple commercial biologics, access to scalable manufacturing infrastructure can help accommodate changing demand while supporting consistent production and quality requirements.
Dual Regulatory Submissions Support Global Supply Resilience
A major feature of the expanded partnership is the plan to operate Yokohama and Copenhagen as interconnected manufacturing and supply locations. The companies intend to use dual regulatory submissions for several products, supporting their potential manufacture and supply from both facilities. This approach is designed to provide greater flexibility when production needs change and help pharmaceutical customers maintain regional manufacturing capabilities while serving international markets. Operating multiple sites as an integrated supply network requires effective coordination of manufacturing processes, analytical methods, quality systems and regulatory documentation. Technology transfer, process validation and manufacturing comparability are particularly important when pharmaceutical production is transferred or expanded between different facilities. These activities help ensure that manufacturing changes are appropriately evaluated and that products continue to meet established quality requirements. For pharmaceutical companies, geographic diversification can also help reduce dependence on a single manufacturing location and strengthen supply-chain continuity. AGC Biologics believes the expanded partnership demonstrates the value of combining global manufacturing infrastructure with regional production capabilities. The agreement further strengthens AGC Biologics’ position in the international CDMO market, particularly in large-scale mammalian single-use manufacturing. Overall, the €0.5 billion-plus partnership highlights the growing importance of commercial biologics outsourcing, GMP manufacturing expertise and flexible production networks in the pharmaceutical industry. The expansion across Copenhagen and Yokohama is expected to support long-term manufacturing requirements and provide a more resilient supply framework for commercial biologic medicines.
