Zepto Life Technology has expanded its FungiFlex® molecular diagnostics portfolio with the launch of FungiFlex® Pneumocystis jirovecii and the FungiFlex® Mold Plus Panel, introducing new plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA) liquid biopsy assays designed to improve the rapid detection of life-threatening fungal infections in immunocompromised patients. The expanded test menu strengthens Zepto’s precision diagnostics platform by enabling clinicians to identify Pneumocystis jirovecii (PJP/PCP) alongside invasive mold pathogens using a minimally invasive blood sample. The new diagnostic options address a significant unmet need in fungal disease management, where early identification is critical for initiating appropriate antifungal therapy and improving patient outcomes. Patients undergoing organ transplantation, individuals with hematologic malignancies, and those with weakened immune systems remain at particularly high risk for severe fungal infections that are often difficult to diagnose using conventional laboratory methods. By expanding the FungiFlex® portfolio, Zepto Life Technology aims to provide clinicians and hospital laboratories with faster, more flexible diagnostic tools that support evidence-based treatment decisions while reducing diagnostic delays.
Expanded FungiFlex Portfolio Improves Fungal Infection Diagnosis
The newly introduced FungiFlex® Pneumocystis jirovecii assay is a targeted plasma cfDNA liquid biopsy test specifically developed to detect Pneumocystis jirovecii, the fungal pathogen responsible for Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP). Alongside this targeted assay, Zepto has also launched the FungiFlex® Mold Plus Panel, which combines Pneumocystis detection with screening for 14 clinically significant invasive mold pathogens, including Aspergillus, Mucorales, Fusarium, and Scedosporium/Lomentospora, within a single plasma-based test. The expanded testing menu enables healthcare providers to choose between targeted or comprehensive fungal diagnostics depending on individual patient presentations. According to the company, the addition of Pneumocystis testing directly reflects repeated requests from physicians and clinical laboratories that frequently evaluate both PCP and invasive mold infections simultaneously during the initial diagnostic assessment of high-risk patients. This flexible testing strategy supports more comprehensive evaluation without requiring multiple invasive diagnostic procedures.
Rapid Liquid Biopsy Supports Precision Infectious Disease Testing
All FungiFlex® assays are performed through Zepto Life Technology’s CLIA-certified reference laboratory, delivering species-level fungal identification directly from plasma with reported turnaround times of less than 24 hours after sample receipt. Unlike conventional fungal diagnostic methods that may require invasive tissue sampling, bronchoscopy, or lengthy culture-based testing, the plasma cfDNA liquid biopsy approach offers a minimally invasive alternative capable of detecting circulating fungal DNA quickly and accurately. Chief Executive Officer Hannah Zhang stated that the latest product launch was driven directly by physician feedback, emphasizing the company’s commitment to developing diagnostic solutions that align with real-world clinical practice.
Zepto also confirmed that the introduction of these assays represents only the next stage in the continued expansion of the FungiFlex® testing portfolio, with additional targeted plasma cfDNA assays planned to address other unmet needs in fungal diagnostics. Beyond its expanding reference laboratory services, the company is also advancing the Zepto MDx Platform, which is being developed to deliver onsite, sample-to-result liquid biopsy diagnostics directly within hospital laboratories. As the global burden of opportunistic fungal infections continues to increase among immunocompromised patient populations, Zepto Life Technology’s latest innovation reinforces the growing role of molecular diagnostics, liquid biopsy, and precision infectious disease testing in enabling earlier diagnosis, more targeted therapy, and improved clinical outcomes across transplant medicine, oncology, and critical care settings.
