EMA Recommends First RNA-Based Veterinary Vaccine in EU

The European Medicines Agency (EMA), through its Committee for Veterinary Medicinal Products (CVMP), has announced key regulatory updates following its April 2026 meeting, including a landmark recommendation for the first self-amplifying RNA (saRNA)-based veterinary vaccine for cats. The decision highlights a major advancement in veterinary biotechnology, alongside updates on pharmacovigilance, antimicrobial resistance, and regulatory guidance shaping the future of animal health innovation.

First RNA-Based Veterinary Vaccine Recommended in EU

A major highlight from the meeting is the CVMP’s positive opinion for Nobivac NXT HCPChFeLV, a next-generation multivalent feline vaccine designed to protect against multiple viral and bacterial infections. This vaccine is notable as the first veterinary product in the European Union to utilize self-amplifying RNA technology, packaged within a replication-deficient viral particle.

The vaccine provides broad protection against several serious feline diseases, including feline herpesvirus (FHV-1), feline calicivirus (FCV), panleucopenia virus (FPL), Chlamydia felis, and feline leukemia virus (FeLV). By reducing mortality, clinical symptoms, and viral shedding, the vaccine represents a significant leap in preventive veterinary medicine.

Meanwhile, a re-examination of Vectormune HVT-AIV, an avian influenza vaccine, resulted in the extension of its marketing authorization under exceptional circumstances, ensuring continued availability in critical disease control efforts.

Furthermore, the CVMP addressed concerns related to antiparasitic resistance, recommending dosage updates and warnings for veterinary medicines containing albendazole used in sheep. These measures aim to maintain therapeutic effectiveness while minimizing resistance development, a growing global concern in both human and veterinary medicine.

Advancing Innovation Through Guidelines and Scientific Advice

The CVMP also focused on advancing regulatory science and innovation by adopting new and revised guidelines covering antimicrobials, biosimilarity, and pharmaceutical quality standards. Notably, the Committee initiated consultation on guidance for biosimilar veterinary medicines, supporting the development of cost-effective biological treatments while maintaining high standards of safety and efficacy.

Updates to quality guidelines, including those related to synthetic peptides and residual solvents, reflect the EMA’s commitment to ensuring robust manufacturing practices and product quality.
