Indianapolis, Indiana, USA – May 18, 2026
Elanco Animal Health Incorporated announced the phased U.S. launch of Befrena™ (tirnovetmab), a new anti-IL-31 monoclonal antibody injection developed for the treatment of canine allergic dermatitis and canine atopic dermatitis. The launch marks a significant advancement in veterinary biologic therapies and strengthens Elanco’s position within the rapidly growing $1.3 billion U.S. canine dermatology market. Designed to control itch within 24 hours and provide relief lasting between six and eight weeks, Befrena offers veterinarians and pet owners a new treatment option for one of the most common health issues affecting companion animals today.
The introduction of Befrena comes as veterinary experts anticipate a longer and more severe allergy season across the United States, increasing demand for effective dermatology solutions for pets. Elanco stated that nearly two in three dogs suffering from itch experience worsening symptoms during allergy season, highlighting the need for advanced and longer-lasting treatment options. The company also confirmed that select veterinarians participating in the Early Experience Program have already begun using Befrena in clinical practice and are reporting positive outcomes in dogs suffering from severe itching and skin inflammation.
Monoclonal Antibody Innovation Expands Veterinary Dermatology
Befrena is designed to target and neutralize interleukin-31 (IL-31), a key cytokine responsible for transmitting itch signals to the brain in dogs affected by allergic and atopic dermatitis. By blocking IL-31 activity, the therapy helps rapidly reduce itch and inflammation while improving overall skin health and quality of life in affected animals. Veterinary specialists believe biologic therapies such as monoclonal antibodies represent one of the fastest-growing innovation areas in companion animal medicine.
According to Elanco, Befrena provides a differentiated dosing interval of six to eight weeks, compared to the four-to-eight-week interval associated with competing therapies currently available in the market. The injection is administered in-clinic by or under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian and is approved for use without age or weight restrictions, expanding accessibility across a broad canine patient population.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture approved Befrena in December 2025, making it Elanco’s second dermatology product launched in the past two years alongside Zenrelia™ (ilunocitinib tablets). The company also noted that it is now the only pet health company with two USDA-approved monoclonal antibody products in the veterinary market, including Befrena and Trutect™, the first approved therapeutic solution for canine parvovirus.
Early Clinical Experience Shows Positive Results in Dogs
Elanco highlighted several early patient success stories from the Befrena Early Experience Program involving veterinary clinics and dermatology specialists across the United States. One of the first dogs treated with Befrena, a six-year-old Yorkie named Beaux from Austin, Texas, reportedly stopped itching within 24 hours following injection therapy and demonstrated significant hair regrowth during follow-up evaluations.
Veterinary dermatologists participating in the program described the therapy as both highly safe and effective, particularly for dogs that had not responded well to existing treatment approaches. Additional early-use cases involving dogs with severe seasonal allergies and chronic atopic dermatitis also showed encouraging improvements in itch control and overall comfort levels. Veterinary experts emphasized that rapid symptom control may significantly improve both animal welfare and pet owner satisfaction.
Industry analysts note that allergic skin disease remains one of the leading reasons for veterinary visits in companion animal healthcare. Persistent itch and inflammation can result in secondary skin infections, hair loss, behavioral changes, and reduced quality of life in dogs if left untreated. The growing adoption of biologic therapies is expected to reshape the veterinary dermatology market as clinics increasingly seek targeted immune-modulating solutions with improved convenience and efficacy profiles.
Veterinary Biologics Continue Expanding Companion Animal Care
The launch of Befrena reflects broader trends within the animal health industry, where companies are investing heavily in biologics, immunology, and precision veterinary medicine. Companion animal owners are increasingly seeking advanced therapies that deliver rapid relief, reduced dosing frequency, and better long-term disease management for chronic conditions such as allergic dermatitis.
Elanco executives stated that the company plans to continue expanding production capacity and scaling manufacturing operations as demand for the new therapy increases nationwide. Analysts believe the successful commercialization of monoclonal antibody therapies may accelerate additional innovation in veterinary immunology and chronic disease management across the global pet healthcare market.
