UroGen Pharma announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued a Notice of Allowance for a new patent application covering methods of treating recurrent low-grade intermediate-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (LG-IR-NMIBC) using its proprietary RTGel® technology with mitomycin. Once issued, the patent is expected to provide intellectual property protection for ZUSDURI™ and the investigational therapy UGN-103 through July 2044.
Patent Covers Non-Surgical Treatment Approach
The allowed patent claims protect methods of treating adults with recurrent LG-IR-NMIBC without transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT). The claims are supported by clinical evidence generated from UroGen’s ENVISION and ATLAS clinical trials, which evaluated RTGel-based mitomycin therapy as a primary, non-surgical treatment option. The company believes this approach can provide durable recurrence-free intervals while reducing the need for repeated surgical procedures.
Strengthening the RTGel Technology Platform
The newly allowed patent further reinforces the intellectual property surrounding RTGel®, UroGen’s proprietary sustained-release hydrogel technology designed to prolong drug exposure within the urinary tract. ZUSDURI, the company’s FDA-approved intravesical mitomycin therapy for recurrent LG-IR-NMIBC, utilizes RTGel to enable localized, non-surgical treatment delivered directly into the bladder in an outpatient setting by a healthcare professional.

Supporting Future Growth of UGN-103
The patent allowance also strengthens protection for UGN-103, UroGen’s next-generation investigational therapy licensed from medac. UGN-103 combines the company’s RTGel platform with an enhanced lyophilized mitomycin formulation designed to simplify preparation and improve clinical usability while maintaining sustained drug delivery. Together with existing patents expected to extend through December 2041, the newly allowed patent expands UroGen’s long-term intellectual property portfolio supporting continued innovation in non-surgical therapies for urothelial cancers.
