Syntax Bio announced a research and development collaboration with Mayo Clinic to accelerate the development of stem cell-derived pancreatic cell therapies for Type 1 diabetes. The partnership combines Syntax Bio’s proprietary Cellgorithmâ„¢ platform with Mayo Clinic’s expertise in pancreatic biology, preclinical testing, and translational medicine to advance a potential next-generation treatment for insulin-dependent diabetes.
Collaboration Targets Development of Allogeneic Beta Cell Therapy
Under the agreement, Syntax Bio will use its CRISPR-based Cellgorithmâ„¢ platform to guide induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) into functional pancreatic beta cells capable of producing insulin. Mayo Clinic will support the program through functional testing, preclinical diabetes models, and regulatory-enabling research activities. The collaboration aims to solve key challenges in cell therapy development, including cell identity, cell function, manufacturing consistency, and scalable production.
Cellgorithm Platform Designed to Accelerate Cell Therapy Development
Syntax Bio’s Cellgorithmâ„¢ technology programs stem cell differentiation through controlled gene activation, reducing the need for labor-intensive manufacturing processes. The platform has demonstrated the ability to generate target cell types in days or weeks rather than months, potentially improving the speed, reliability, and scalability of regenerative medicine development. Researchers will use rapid development cycles to optimize beta cell maturity, performance, and therapeutic potential.
Program Builds on Expanding Type 1 Diabetes Research Efforts
The collaboration follows Syntax Bio’s recent funding support from Breakthrough T1D to advance pancreatic beta cell therapies. The companies believe the combination of synthetic biology, stem cell engineering, and translational research expertise could help develop a potentially transformative treatment approach for patients with Type 1 diabetes.
