Alvotech, a biotechnology company focused on the development and manufacture of biosimilar medicines, has announced a strategic licensing and commercialization agreement with Lotus Pharmaceutical covering two proposed biosimilar candidates, AVT34 and AVT87, in the United States and selected Asian markets. The agreement represents a significant expansion of Alvotech’s commercial strategy and could broaden access to biosimilar versions of established biologic medicines used in oncology and hemophilia care. Under the agreement, AVT34 is being developed as a proposed biosimilar to Imfinzi® (durvalumab), while AVT87 is a proposed biosimilar to Hemlibra® (emicizumab). The partnership combines Alvotech’s integrated biosimilar development and manufacturing capabilities with Lotus Pharmaceutical’s commercial and regional market expertise.
Two Biosimilar Candidates Target Major Biologic Therapies
The agreement covers two proposed biosimilars with applications across important therapeutic areas. AVT34, Alvotech’s proposed biosimilar to durvalumab, targets a widely used oncology biologic. Durvalumab is used in the treatment of multiple cancers, and its reference product generated approximately $6.1 billion in global sales in 2025, according to the information provided by Alvotech. The second candidate, AVT87, is a proposed biosimilar to emicizumab, a biologic used for routine prophylaxis to prevent or reduce bleeding episodes in people with hemophilia A. The reference product generated approximately $5.8 billion in global sales in 2025. By developing biosimilar alternatives to these established biologics, Alvotech is positioning the two candidates for potential future use in oncology and rare-disease treatment markets.
U.S. and Asian Commercialization Strategy
Under the semi-exclusive agreement in the United States, Alvotech will retain the ability to commercialize AVT34 and AVT87 directly alongside Lotus. Lotus will commercialize the products through Alvogen, its wholly owned U.S. subsidiary. Alvotech will remain responsible for product development and obtaining and maintaining U.S. marketing authorizations, while also serving as the exclusive supplier of the products across the markets covered by the agreement. In Asia, Lotus will receive exclusive commercialization rights across eight selected markets: South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia. Lotus will also manage local regulatory submissions and commercialization activities in these territories. The agreement therefore establishes a coordinated development, regulatory, manufacturing, and commercialization framework intended to support the potential future availability of the two biosimilar candidates across multiple international markets.
Partnership Strengthens Global Biosimilar Access
The agreement has a potential value to Alvotech of approximately $150 million in upfront and milestone payments, in addition to continuing revenues from the supply of commercial products. The financial structure provides Alvotech with an opportunity to participate more directly in future commercialization while maintaining its role in development and manufacturing. For Lotus Pharmaceutical, the collaboration expands its global biosimilar portfolio and strengthens its presence in oncology and rare diseases. The partnership also highlights the growing importance of strategic collaborations in the biosimilar industry, where specialized development and manufacturing capabilities can be combined with established regional commercial networks. Alvotech currently has multiple approved and marketed biosimilars and a broader pipeline addressing autoimmune disorders, eye diseases, and cancer. Through the agreement with Lotus, the company aims to extend the potential reach of its integrated biosimilar platform while supporting broader access to high-quality biologic medicines. The collaboration reflects continued industry efforts to develop and commercialize biosimilars that can expand treatment options and potentially improve access to important biologic therapies worldwide.
