SetPoint Medical announced the publication of a peer-reviewed health economics study demonstrating that its FDA-approved SetPoint System® could significantly reduce long-term healthcare costs while improving quality of life for patients with moderate-to-severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Published in the Journal of Medical Economics, the study found that the company’s neuroimmune modulation technology may save the U.S. healthcare system more than $350,000 per patient over a lifetime compared with standard pharmacologic therapies, while also delivering measurable improvements in patient outcomes and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs).
Neuroimmune Modulation Demonstrates Strong Economic Value
The study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of the SetPoint System, a device-based therapy that stimulates the vagus nerve to activate the body’s innate anti-inflammatory pathways. Researchers used a decision-analytic Markov model to compare neuroimmune modulation therapy against current standard-of-care biologic and targeted synthetic antirheumatic drug therapies for rheumatoid arthritis over two-year, 10-year, and lifetime treatment horizons.
According to the findings, the upfront cost of the implanted neurostimulator device and surgical procedure was projected to be fully recovered within 16 months of treatment initiation. The study also concluded that neuroimmune modulation therapy generated projected healthcare savings of approximately $25,397 at two years, $197,062 at 10 years, and $350,052 over a patient’s lifetime while simultaneously improving patient quality of life.
Researchers described the therapy as an economically “dominant” treatment strategy because it achieved both cost savings and superior clinical outcomes compared to conventional RA pharmacologic management. Importantly, the favorable economic profile remained consistent across multiple sensitivity analyses, including lower drug pricing assumptions and alternative device service-life scenarios.
Murthy Simhambhatla, Chief Executive Officer of SetPoint Medical, stated that the findings reinforce the company’s belief that neuroimmune modulation could represent a transformative change in rheumatoid arthritis treatment. He emphasized that the rapid cost recovery period combined with sustained lifetime savings highlights the long-term value of the SetPoint System for both patients and healthcare providers.
FDA-Approved Device Offers Non-Drug RA Alternative
The SetPoint System became the first FDA-approved neuroimmune modulation therapy for rheumatoid arthritis after receiving regulatory approval in July 2025. The implanted device is indicated for adult patients with moderately to severely active RA who have experienced inadequate response, loss of response, or intolerance to one or more biologic or targeted synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (b/tsDMARDs).
Unlike traditional RA therapies that rely on chronic pharmacologic intervention, the SetPoint System delivers a one-minute daily stimulation to the vagus nerve to reduce inflammation through activation of innate anti-inflammatory pathways. The company stated that the neurostimulator carries an FDA-labeled service life of up to 10 years, supporting its long-term economic and therapeutic potential.
The publication comes as healthcare systems continue facing rising costs associated with biologic RA therapies. More than 1.5 million Americans currently live with rheumatoid arthritis, while biologic and targeted synthetic RA drugs accounted for nearly $30 billion in U.S. drug spending during 2023, including $13.6 billion in Medicare Part D expenditures alone.
SetPoint Expands Commercial and Clinical Strategy
SetPoint Medical stated that the FDA-approved device is currently available in select U.S. markets, with broader national expansion planned throughout 2026. The company is also exploring the use of its proprietary neuroimmune modulation platform in additional autoimmune conditions, including multiple sclerosis and Crohn’s disease, as part of its long-term clinical development strategy.
Senior study author Jan B. Pietzsch, Ph.D., from Stanford University’s Mussallem Center for Biodesign and Wing Tech Inc., described the projected level of health-economic dominance achieved by the therapy as unique among implantable medical devices, particularly given the simultaneous combination of significant cost reduction and improved patient outcomes.
The findings further strengthen growing industry interest in bioelectronic medicine and neuroimmune modulation technologies as alternatives to long-term drug-based autoimmune disease management.
