DENVER, July 14, 2026
SeaStar Medical announced its support for multiple educational initiatives aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric acute kidney injury (AKI), including sponsorship of the KidneyBee Summit 2026 and an upcoming clinician webinar focused on its FDA-approved QUELIMMUNE® (SCD-PED) therapy. The company said the programs are intended to increase awareness of pediatric AKI, promote clinical best practices, and expand education on new treatment approaches for critically ill children with sepsis-associated AKI.
Educational Initiatives Focus on Improving Pediatric AKI Care
SeaStar Medical is sponsoring the KidneyBee Summit 2026, held July 14–16 at Children’s Hospital Colorado, where pediatric nephrologists, critical care physicians, nurses, and advanced practice providers are collaborating to address persistent challenges in recognizing and treating pediatric AKI. The company also announced an educational webinar, “Rethinking Pediatric Sepsis-Associated AKI: What Clinicians Should Know About QUELIMMUNE,” scheduled for August 11, 2026, featuring leading pediatric kidney specialists who will discuss emerging treatment strategies for critically ill children.
QUELIMMUNE Demonstrates Promising Clinical Outcomes
QUELIMMUNE is the first FDA-approved disease-modifying device for pediatric patients with life-threatening AKI associated with sepsis who require renal replacement therapy. Approved under a Humanitarian Device Exemption in February 2024, the therapy is designed to neutralize overactive immune cells and reduce destructive hyperinflammation by modulating the body’s immune response. Clinical studies published in Kidney Medicine reported a 77% survival rate among patients treated with QUELIMMUNE, representing an approximately 50% reduction in mortality compared with historical outcomes. Real-world data from the QUELIMMUNE SAVE Registry further demonstrated favorable safety, no device-related infections, and survival rates exceeding 70% through Day 90.
SeaStar Continues Expanding Critical Care Innovation
SeaStar Medical noted that the technology underlying QUELIMMUNE, known as the Selective Cytopheretic Device (SCD), has broader potential across acute and chronic kidney and cardiovascular diseases driven by hyperinflammation. The company is currently evaluating SCD therapy in the NEUTRALIZE-AKI pivotal trial for adults with acute kidney injury requiring continuous renal replacement therapy, while continuing to advance educational initiatives that support adoption of innovative therapies for critically ill pediatric patients.
