The inaugural publication presents findings from the first prospective formative clinical evaluation of AeroShield™ Enhanced Radiation Protection Device (ERPD) at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare. AeroShield Demonstrates Low Occupational Radiation Exposure
The inaugural evaluation was a prospective observational assessment of 61 consecutive fluoroscopically guided procedures conducted at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare under the direction of William Dixon, MD. The evaluation examined AeroShield’s performance across multiple procedure types while measuring occupational radiation exposure at four clinical staff positions. According to Salus Scientific, the assessment demonstrated low occupational radiation exposure per procedure, with average normalized doses of 0.83 mrem per case for the primary operator, 0.23 mrem for the scrub technologist, and 0.09 mrem for the sedation nurse outside the lead aprons. The company reported that these findings were statistically significant, with p<0.001. The evaluation included procedures such as diagnostic coronary angiography, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), right heart catheterization, and peripheral interventions, providing early evidence across a range of fluoroscopy-guided clinical environments.
Clinical Workflow Integration Supports Routine Use
Beyond radiation exposure measurements, the Clinical Insights Series emphasizes procedural versatility and workflow integration as important factors when evaluating enhanced radiation protection devices. AeroShield achieved 100% procedural utilization throughout the 61 evaluated procedures, remaining in place during every case. Salus Scientific reported that clinical teams experienced minimal impact on patient preparation, room turnover, and procedural access. The team also reportedly achieved proficiency with the technology after approximately one to two procedures, suggesting that integration into established procedural workflows can occur rapidly. These observations form part of Salus Scientific’s broader effort to evaluate radiation protection technology using practical clinical endpoints rather than focusing exclusively on percentage reductions in radiation exposure.
