Rockville, Maryland, U.S., October 13, 2026
REGENXBIO Inc. has announced plans to host an investor event highlighting surabgene lomparvovec (ABBV-RGX-314), its investigational gene therapy being developed for retinal diseases, including diabetic retinopathy (DR) and wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD). The event is intended to provide an update on the therapy’s clinical development, with a focus on its potential to deliver sustained production of an anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) protein inside the eye. Surabgene lomparvovec uses an adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector to deliver genetic instructions to retinal cells, with the aim of reducing dependence on repeated injections of conventional anti-VEGF medicines. The program is being developed by REGENXBIO in collaboration with AbbVie, combining REGENXBIO’s gene therapy platform with AbbVie’s ophthalmology development and commercialization capabilities. The candidate remains investigational, and its safety, effectiveness, durability and potential role in clinical practice continue to require evaluation through clinical trials and regulatory review.
Investor Event to Review Wet AMD Clinical Program
The investor event, titled “Sura-vec in Wet AMD: Clinical Program Overview and Expert Perspectives,” is scheduled for October 20, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, in New York City and through a virtual webcast. REGENXBIO management will review the treatment landscape, the unmet medical needs of people living with wet AMD, and progress in the pivotal ATMOSPHERE and ASCENT clinical trials. The program will also feature perspectives from retina specialists, including Gaurav Shah, M.D., Arshad Khanani, M.D., Lejla Vajzovic, M.D., Rahul Khurana, M.D., and Ramanath Bhandari, M.D. Their participation is intended to provide clinical perspectives on the potential role of gene therapy in managing wet AMD and the practical considerations associated with introducing a new treatment approach. The company expects to report topline results from the pivotal wet AMD studies in the fourth quarter of 2026. These results will be an important milestone in assessing the candidate’s clinical profile and determining the next steps in its development.
One-Time Gene Therapy Targets Retinal Disease
Surabgene lomparvovec is designed to use an adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector to deliver genetic instructions to retinal cells, enabling them to produce a therapeutic anti-VEGF protein. VEGF contributes to the growth and leakage of abnormal blood vessels associated with wet AMD. Current anti-VEGF treatments generally require repeated injections into the eye to control disease activity and help preserve vision. By enabling retinal cells to produce an anti-VEGF protein, surabgene lomparvovec is being investigated as a potential one-time gene therapy that could reduce the need for frequent treatment. The candidate is being evaluated using subretinal delivery for wet AMD, while a separate development program investigates suprachoroidal administration for diabetic retinopathy. These delivery approaches address different retinal conditions and should not be considered interchangeable. The investigational therapy could potentially offer a more durable treatment strategy, but its long-term safety, effectiveness and ability to reduce treatment burden must be established through clinical evidence and regulatory assessment.
Pivotal Trial Results Expected in Late 2026
The forthcoming investor event comes as REGENXBIO advances its late-stage retinal gene therapy program in collaboration with AbbVie. The ATMOSPHERE and ASCENT pivotal trials are central to evaluating surabgene lomparvovec for wet AMD, with topline findings anticipated in the fourth quarter of 2026. Separately, REGENXBIO reported three-year follow-up findings from the Phase II ALTITUDE study in diabetic retinopathy in September 2026, providing additional information about the candidate’s potential durability in a different retinal disease. Those findings do not substitute for the pivotal wet AMD results, which will be important for evaluating the therapy in its intended population. The October investor event is also expected to address the program’s commercial readiness, reflecting the company’s preparation for potential future development milestones. Surabgene lomparvovec remains investigational and is not an approved treatment for wet AMD or diabetic retinopathy. The forthcoming clinical data, subsequent regulatory discussions and further assessment of the benefit-risk profile will help determine its future prospects.
