Pillar Biosciences, Inc. and Hamilton Company have announced the validation and commercial release of a new automated next-generation sequencing (NGS) library preparation method for the oncoReveal® Nexus 21 Gene Panel on Hamilton Microlab® STAR™ and STARlet™ liquid handling systems. The latest workflow expands the companies’ NGS Application Development and Co-Marketing Agreement and provides laboratories with an additional automation-ready solution for targeted cancer research. The research-use-only (RUO) oncoReveal Nexus 21 Gene Panel is designed to interrogate 21 genes associated with hematologic and solid tumors, supporting laboratories seeking scalable and reproducible approaches to cancer-focused genomic research.
Automated Workflow Supports Up to 96 NGS Libraries
The newly released Nexus 21 automation method is designed to prepare up to 96 NGS libraries in a single continuous run, enabling laboratories to automate Pillar Biosciences’ single-tube, SLIMamp®-powered target enrichment workflow. The automation method supports 8 to 96 libraries per run on the Hamilton STAR platform and 8 to 24 libraries on the STARlet system, with sample numbers selectable in multiples of eight. This flexibility allows laboratories to select throughput according to their research requirements while reducing the amount of manual intervention required during library preparation. The workflow integrates Hamilton’s Multi-Probe Head (MPH) and synchronized on-deck processing to help reduce overall preparation time. A guided software interface is also designed to simplify deck setup, reagent loading and run configuration, providing researchers with a streamlined approach to implementing automated targeted NGS workflows.
Improved Efficiency and Reproducibility for Cancer Research
According to the companies, the automated workflow is designed to improve laboratory efficiency, workflow reproducibility and sample-processing capacity. By reducing manual sample and reagent handling, the method can help laboratories manage larger NGS research workloads while maintaining a consistent workflow. The system does not require mandatory mid-run tip reloads, further simplifying continuous processing. Optimized liquid handling is also designed to reduce reagent dead volume and improve reagent utilization, potentially supporting more economical NGS library preparation. The Nexus 21 panel brings together a focused set of targets relevant to both hematologic malignancies and solid tumor research, giving laboratories a targeted approach for genomic investigations across multiple oncology applications. As an RUO workflow, the system is positioned for research applications rather than as a clinical diagnostic claim, making the automation release particularly relevant to laboratories conducting cancer genomics and molecular research.
Collaboration Expands Automated NGS Portfolio
The Nexus 21 release represents the second validated automation workflow developed through the collaboration between Pillar Biosciences and Hamilton. The companies said the expanded portfolio is intended to give laboratories greater flexibility when implementing automated NGS workflows across oncology research programs. Pillar Biosciences’ SLIMamp® and PiVAT® technologies support its broader NGS portfolio, while Hamilton contributes automated liquid handling capabilities through its Microlab STAR and STARlet platforms. By combining targeted NGS chemistry with laboratory automation, the collaboration aims to help researchers scale genomic studies while reducing hands-on processing requirements. The latest commercial release also reflects the growing integration of NGS workflows and laboratory automation, an important trend for laboratories seeking higher throughput and more standardized molecular research processes.
