BREMEN, Germany, May 5, 2026
Smith+Nephew, the global medical technology company specializing in advanced wound management and surgical innovation, has announced the launch of two next-generation chronic wound care technologies, ALLEVYN™ COMPLETE CARE Foam Dressing and RENASYS™ EDGE Negative Pressure Wound Therapy System, ahead of the European Wound Management Association (EWMA) Conference 2026. The new products are designed to improve chronic wound healing, reduce healthcare burden, and enhance patient care outcomes as demand for advanced wound management solutions continues to rise across Europe and global healthcare markets.
Smith+Nephew stated that chronic wounds currently affect up to 14.9 million people across Europe and account for as much as 4% of healthcare spending, creating a major challenge for healthcare providers and wound care specialists. The company emphasized that the introduction of these advanced technologies reflects its long-term commitment to developing innovative solutions that support clinicians throughout the wound care continuum while improving patient quality of life.
ALLEVYN COMPLETE CARE Targets Wound Healing and Pressure Injury Prevention
According to Smith+Nephew, the newly introduced ALLEVYN COMPLETE CARE Foam Dressing features a specialized five-layer construction engineered to support both chronic wound management and pressure ulcer prevention. The advanced dressing integrates the company’s proprietary ExuLOCK™ Technology, designed to lock in wound exudate and bacteria while reducing bacterial release compared to conventional foam dressings.
The dressing also incorporates an ExuMASK™ Change Indicator, which helps clinicians monitor dressing saturation and optimize wear time, potentially reducing unnecessary dressing changes while supporting improved wound healing conditions. In addition, Smith+Nephew’s ShearDEFENSE™ Unbonded Layer Technology is intended to protect vulnerable tissue by dissipating shear forces associated with pressure injuries and chronic wound complications.
The company highlighted that pressure injuries and chronic wounds remain a growing healthcare concern among aging populations and patients with long-term medical conditions, increasing demand for wound care technologies capable of improving clinical efficiency while minimizing complications. Smith+Nephew believes ALLEVYN COMPLETE CARE may help simplify wound management for healthcare professionals while delivering stronger patient outcomes across hospital and community care settings.
RENASYS EDGE System Designed for Simplicity and Patient Compliance
Smith+Nephew also unveiled the RENASYS EDGE Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (tNPWT) System, a portable wound management device developed to support ease of use, patient mobility, and therapy compliance. The lightweight system is specifically designed to simplify chronic wound treatment while supporting improved healing performance through portable negative pressure wound therapy technology.
The company reported that the RENASYS EDGE platform demonstrated high patient compliance rates averaging 88% therapy session adherence, while the modular system architecture reduces maintenance requirements by eliminating the need for annual servicing. Smith+Nephew stated that the product’s portability and discreet design are intended to improve convenience for patients undergoing long-term wound care treatment, while also supporting self-care management outside traditional clinical environments.
EWMA 2026 Showcases Smith+Nephew’s Wound Care Strategy
Smith+Nephew plans to showcase both innovations at EWMA 2026 in Bremen, Germany, where the company will present interactive workshops and expert-led educational symposiums focused on chronic wound healing and pressure injury prevention. The company stated that its evolving wound management portfolio reflects a broader patient-centric strategy emphasizing early intervention, integrated treatment approaches, and improved long-term outcomes for chronic wound patients.
Rohit Kashyap, President of Advanced Wound Management at Smith+Nephew, stated that chronic wound care remains a strategic priority for the company and that continued innovation in wound therapy technologies will play a key role in advancing patient recovery and healthcare efficiency. As healthcare systems increasingly focus on cost reduction and patient-centered care, advanced wound management technologies are expected to become an increasingly important segment within the global medical device industry.
