Lupin Limited has announced that it has received tentative approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for Revefenacin Inhalation Solution, 175 mcg/3 mL Unit-Dose Vials, a generic version of Yupelri® used for the maintenance treatment of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The regulatory milestone further strengthens Lupin’s respiratory portfolio and highlights the company’s growing presence in the complex generic inhalation market in the United States.
The approved product is bioequivalent to Mylan’s Yupelri® Inhalation Solution, a long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA) therapy prescribed for the long-term maintenance treatment of COPD patients. According to IQVIA MAT March 2026 data, the reference listed drug recorded estimated annual sales of approximately USD 260.7 million in the U.S., making it an attractive opportunity in the respiratory therapeutics market. The tentative approval positions Lupin to enter the market upon expiration of applicable exclusivity or patent protections linked to the reference product.
FDA Tentative Approval Strengthens Lupin’s Respiratory Franchise
The latest FDA action reinforces Lupin’s strategic focus on expanding its respiratory and complex generics pipeline. Respiratory products continue to represent one of the fastest-growing therapeutic categories in the global pharmaceutical market, driven by rising prevalence of chronic respiratory diseases including COPD and asthma. Industry experts believe demand for cost-effective inhalation therapies is expected to increase significantly as healthcare systems seek affordable long-term disease management solutions.
COPD remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, affecting millions of patients and creating substantial healthcare burdens across developed and emerging markets. The disease causes progressive airflow obstruction, breathing difficulties, chronic cough, and reduced lung function, often requiring long-term maintenance therapy to improve quality of life and reduce exacerbations.
Revefenacin is a once-daily nebulized bronchodilator therapy designed specifically for COPD maintenance treatment. The inhalation solution works by relaxing airway muscles and improving airflow in patients with chronic respiratory obstruction. As a generic equivalent to Yupelri®, Lupin’s product could potentially improve affordability and patient access to long-acting inhalation therapies in the U.S. respiratory care market.
Lupin Expands Presence in Complex Generics Market
Lupin has continued investing aggressively in complex generics, inhalation products, biotechnology medicines, and specialty pharmaceuticals as part of its long-term growth strategy. The company currently distributes pharmaceutical products across more than 100 global markets and maintains a strong presence in both India and the United States across major therapy areas including respiratory medicine, cardiovascular disease, anti-diabetic therapies, women’s health, gastroenterology, and central nervous system disorders.
The company operates 15 manufacturing facilities and seven research centers globally, supported by a workforce of more than 24,000 employees. Industry analysts view the tentative FDA approval as another indication of Lupin’s growing regulatory and manufacturing capabilities in highly specialized pharmaceutical categories requiring advanced formulation expertise and stringent quality compliance standards.
Respiratory therapies remain strategically important for Lupin as global healthcare systems continue prioritizing treatment accessibility for chronic pulmonary diseases. The company has increasingly focused on inhalation and complex respiratory products where technical development barriers and regulatory requirements create opportunities for differentiated generic competition.
Generic Respiratory Medicines Continue Market Expansion
The global respiratory therapeutics market continues to witness strong growth due to increasing prevalence of smoking-related lung diseases, environmental pollution, aging populations, and rising diagnosis rates for chronic pulmonary disorders. Generic inhalation therapies are expected to play a critical role in reducing healthcare expenditures while maintaining therapeutic effectiveness for long-term respiratory disease management.
Healthcare experts note that affordable nebulized COPD therapies can significantly improve adherence and treatment continuity among elderly and high-risk patient populations. With COPD cases continuing to rise globally, regulatory approvals for lower-cost respiratory medicines remain an important driver of pharmaceutical market competition and patient access.
The tentative approval also reflects ongoing FDA support for generic competition in high-value respiratory medicine categories, particularly for products involving complex inhalation delivery technologies and unit-dose respiratory formulations.
