Lupin Limited has announced the strategic spin-out of two promising clinical-stage oncology programs, LNP7457 (PRMT5 inhibitor) and LNP8701 (SOS1 inhibitor), into newly established Kaveri Therapeutics Inc., a U.S.-based oncology company. The move represents a significant step in Lupin’s long-term oncology strategy, enabling focused clinical development of targeted cancer therapies while allowing the company to retain a significant equity position in the new venture. Through its wholly owned subsidiary Lupin Inc., the company will provide seed funding and grant exclusive global rights to both investigational programs, while Kaveri Therapeutics assumes responsibility for advancing them through global clinical trials. The transaction highlights the increasing use of strategic spin-outs within the pharmaceutical industry to accelerate innovation, attract specialized investment, and bring next-generation precision oncology treatments to patients with difficult-to-treat cancers.
Kaveri Therapeutics to Accelerate Global Oncology Development
The newly formed Kaveri Therapeutics will operate as an independent clinical-stage oncology biotechnology company dedicated to developing targeted small-molecule cancer therapies. The organization will be led by Chief Executive Officer Kristi Jones, an experienced biopharmaceutical executive with a strong history of building innovative life science companies, alongside Chief Medical Officer Dr. Robert Pierce, who will oversee global clinical development. Under the agreement, Lupin Inc. will maintain a significant equity stake in Kaveri while supporting the company through initial seed financing. Kaveri also plans to secure additional capital to advance both oncology assets through future clinical studies. This strategic structure enables Lupin to continue benefiting from the future success of its oncology discoveries while allowing a specialized management team to focus exclusively on advancing the programs through regulatory development and global commercialization.
Two Promising Targeted Therapies Advance in Precision Oncology
The two investigational assets transferred to Kaveri represent promising advances in precision oncology. LNP7457 targets Protein Arginine Methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5), an emerging therapeutic target involved in tumor growth and cancer cell survival, while LNP8701 inhibits SOS1, an important regulator of the RAS signaling pathway, one of the most challenging targets in cancer drug development. Both candidates have already demonstrated encouraging clinical progress, with LNP7457 generating positive clinical data presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting 2025, followed by LNP8701 reporting favorable results at ASCO 2026. Kaveri intends to continue clinical development across multiple solid tumors, including lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer, and central nervous system (CNS)-related malignancies, while utilizing biomarker-driven clinical strategies and rational combination therapies to maximize treatment effectiveness for patients with limited therapeutic options.
Strategic Spin-Out Strengthens Lupin’s Oncology Innovation
The formation of Kaveri Therapeutics reflects Lupin’s commitment to advancing innovative oncology research through strategic partnerships and focused development models. By creating an independent company dedicated exclusively to oncology innovation, Lupin aims to accelerate the progression of promising therapies while maintaining long-term participation through its equity ownership. The transaction also demonstrates a growing trend within the global pharmaceutical industry, where companies establish specialized biotechnology ventures to unlock greater value from innovative research assets. Headquartered in Mumbai, Lupin continues to strengthen its global presence across branded medicines, generics, biotechnology products, and active pharmaceutical ingredients while expanding investments in precision medicine and oncology research. The spin-out of LNP7457 and LNP8701 positions both Lupin and Kaveri Therapeutics to advance the next generation of targeted cancer therapies, supporting continued innovation in oncology and improving treatment possibilities for patients facing aggressive and difficult-to-treat cancers worldwide.
