Leo Cancer Care has announced a commercial collaboration with GE HealthCare to explore the integration of advanced medical imaging, intelligent radiation therapy software, and upright radiation therapy. The collaboration is intended to create more connected patient and data workflows spanning simulation through treatment, with the companies focusing on interoperability, clinical workflow efficiency, and patient-centered radiation oncology. By bringing together GE HealthCare’s imaging and Intelligent Radiation Therapy (iRT) software capabilities with Leo Cancer Care’s future upright radiation therapy platform, the companies aim to address challenges associated with fragmented systems and increasingly complex radiation treatment pathways.
Connecting Imaging and Radiation Treatment Workflows
Radiation oncology frequently involves multiple systems and technology platforms across imaging, treatment planning, and radiation delivery. According to the companies, these multivendor environments can contribute to interoperability challenges, fragmented workflows, infrastructure complexity, and delays between imaging and treatment. The collaboration will explore how GE HealthCare’s iRT software could connect information, applications, and workflows with Leo Cancer Care’s future upright radiation therapy solution. GE HealthCare’s iRT is an AI-supported software solution designed to connect radiation therapy workflows, with the goal of streamlining complex processes and helping clinical teams move patients more efficiently through the radiation therapy pathway. The companies intend to examine how greater connectivity could reduce workflow burden for clinicians while supporting a more coordinated experience from simulation and imaging to treatment.
Upright Radiation Therapy Supports New Approach
A central element of the collaboration is Leo Cancer Care’s focus on upright radiation therapy, an approach designed around treating patients in an upright position rather than exclusively in conventional horizontal treatment positions. The company believes its technology could contribute to a different treatment workflow and patient experience while complementing modern imaging and radiation therapy systems. Through the commercial collaboration, Leo Cancer Care and GE HealthCare plan to investigate how upright treatment technology can work within a broader connected radiation oncology ecosystem. Importantly, the agreement is non-exclusive, allowing both companies to continue working with other organizations across the radiation oncology sector. This approach is intended to support interoperability and complement existing clinical infrastructure rather than require healthcare providers to replace established systems.
Collaboration Targets Patient-Centered Cancer Care
The companies said the collaboration addresses several long-standing challenges in radiation oncology, including patient experience, access to advanced technology, treatment infrastructure costs, system interoperability, and the time between imaging and treatment initiation. By exploring connected workflows, the collaboration could potentially support more coordinated movement of clinical information across different stages of radiation therapy.
