Kirin Holdings Co., Ltd. and GenerativeX Inc. have launched a new research model that integrates AI agents directly into research activities, aiming to enhance researcher creativity and accelerate scientific discovery. The initiative began operating in selected Kirin research departments in 2026 and is designed to establish an AI-native research environment supporting activities from hypothesis formation and information exploration to documentation and knowledge sharing. Rather than positioning AI as a replacement for researchers, the collaboration focuses on using AI as a continuous research partner that can help scientists maintain momentum throughout complex R&D workflows.
AI Agents Integrated Into Research Workflows
The initiative addresses a challenge faced by modern research organizations: researchers frequently move between literature searches, historical data, hypothesis development, documentation, and knowledge sharing. According to the companies, these fragmented activities can interrupt scientific thinking and reduce the time researchers can dedicate to creative and analytical work. The new research environment seeks to integrate AI assistance directly into the research process instead of requiring scientists to independently initiate AI tools whenever support is needed. Under the new model, AI agents are designed to remain present throughout the research workflow, providing support for hypothesis formation, information discovery, scientific discussion, documentation, and knowledge sharing. This integrated approach is intended to help researchers explore ideas without repeatedly stopping their work to search for information or organize previous findings. Kirin is responsible for developing the research concepts and applying the approach within its research sites, while GenerativeX provides the AI technology and system implementation capabilities. Selected research institutes have already begun using the environment, with potential expansion across the wider Kirin Group under consideration.
From Individual Research to Collaborative Knowledge
A key feature of the initiative is its emphasis on making the researcher the central decision-maker. AI is positioned as a collaborative partner intended to enhance human creativity rather than replace scientific expertise. The system can support researchers as they develop hypotheses, explore alternative ideas, organize discussions, and document research activities. The companies are also working toward transforming individual research activities into organizational knowledge. Hypotheses, discussions, exploration histories, and other research information can be accumulated so that insights generated by individual scientists can potentially be reused across research teams. This approach could help organizations preserve valuable scientific knowledge and facilitate collaboration between researchers working in different disciplines. The system has been developed through an agile process involving researchers directly, allowing their feedback to influence the functions and design of the platform. Researchers involved in development have reportedly viewed the resulting tools as being suited to their own research activities. The collaboration is therefore focused not simply on introducing generative AI but on adapting AI capabilities to the practical requirements of scientific R&D.
Kirin Targets Next-Generation AI Research Environment
Kirin and GenerativeX plan to expand the system’s capabilities by developing functions that can understand individual researchers’ expertise and research themes. Future applications may include detecting early signs of research challenges, proposing hypotheses, and facilitating collaboration between researchers. The companies ultimately envision an environment in which AI becomes a natural part of research rather than a separate technology that scientists consciously activate. This could support greater exploration of new hypotheses, encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration, and improve the overall quality of research activities.
The initiative aligns with Kirin Group’s broader digital strategy, which includes using technology both to improve productivity and accelerate work that creates value together with people. Kirin operates across food and health science as well as pharmaceutical businesses, giving AI-enabled research capabilities potential relevance across multiple scientific and innovation activities. For the pharmaceutical and life sciences sector, the collaboration illustrates a shift from using generative AI primarily for administrative efficiency toward AI-supported scientific discovery. By integrating AI agents with research workflows, organizations may be able to connect accumulated knowledge, scientific reasoning, and data analysis more effectively. Kirin and GenerativeX’s initiative represents an early implementation of this AI-native R&D model, with further expansion expected as researchers evaluate its value in real-world research environments.
