MINNEAPOLIS — October 1, 2026
Inspire Medical Systems, Inc. announced that the American Medical Association (AMA) CPT Editorial Panel has approved a new set of Category I CPT codes describing hypoglossal nerve stimulation procedures involving a single lead and implantable pulse generator (IPG), including the company’s recently launched Inspire V system. The new codes are scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2028, providing a standardized coding framework for Inspire V and other single-lead hypoglossal nerve stimulation IPG therapies.
New CPT Codes Support Coding and Reimbursement Processes
The new CPT code language is intended to provide a clearer framework for coding and reimbursement of hypoglossal nerve stimulation procedures. Following creation of the codes, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will conduct its standard valuation process to determine Medicare payment levels for each new code. CMS is expected to seek input from the AMA Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC), which evaluates physician work, practice expenses and related factors. Inspire expects proposed valuations to be published in July 2027, with final valuations expected in November 2027.
Inspire V Uses Closed-Loop Neurostimulation
The new Category I codes include procedures involving Inspire V, a closed-loop implantable device designed to synchronize stimulation with a patient’s natural breathing during sleep. Inspire said the system is supported by more than a decade of clinical experience with its therapy and more than 140,000 patients treated. The company develops minimally invasive medical technologies for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), with Inspire therapy intended for patients with moderate to severe OSA.
Inspire Advances Access to Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation
The new coding framework represents a regulatory and reimbursement infrastructure milestone for hypoglossal nerve stimulation therapies. Inspire said the CPT application received support from professional organizations including the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, American Academy of Sleep Medicine and International Surgical Sleep Society. With the new codes scheduled to become effective in 2028 and CMS valuation activities expected during 2027, the company is continuing to advance the commercial infrastructure supporting Inspire V and its broader OSA therapy platform.
