GSK has announced plans to establish a new global flagship research and development (R&D) centre at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus in the United Kingdom, marking a £400 million investment that reinforces the company’s long-term commitment to scientific innovation and biopharmaceutical research. The state-of-the-art 300,000-square-foot facility will become the home of GSK’s UK R&D operations, accommodating more than 1,000 scientists and supporting the company’s strategy to accelerate its late-stage research pipeline across Oncology, Respiratory, Hepatology, Vaccines, and HIV. Located within one of Europe’s largest biomedical research hubs, the new centre will place GSK scientists alongside globally recognized universities, hospitals, biotechnology companies, and artificial intelligence innovators, creating new opportunities for translational research and collaborative drug development. The investment represents one of the company’s most significant commitments to UK life sciences infrastructure in recent years and is expected to accelerate the discovery and development of next-generation medicines while strengthening the United Kingdom’s position as a global biomedical innovation leader.
New Cambridge R&D Hub to Accelerate Drug Discovery
The new Cambridge Biomedical Campus facility will provide GSK with direct access to one of the world’s leading biomedical research ecosystems, bringing together cutting-edge laboratory science, clinical medicine, and academic expertise. The campus currently hosts more than 22,000 life sciences professionals, welcomes over 37,000 visitors daily, treats more than one million patients annually, and is home to over 470 biotechnology, biopharmaceutical, and artificial intelligence companies. By relocating its UK research operations to Cambridge, GSK aims to strengthen collaboration with leading scientific institutions and existing research partnerships, enabling faster translation of laboratory discoveries into clinical applications. The company plans to equip the new site with advanced technology-enabled laboratories, modern research infrastructure, and collaborative innovation spaces designed to support high-impact biomedical research across its strategic therapeutic areas. Company leadership believes proximity to globally recognized scientific organizations will significantly enhance the speed and quality of medicine discovery while fostering greater collaboration between academic researchers, clinicians, and pharmaceutical scientists.
Strategic Investment Strengthens UK Life Sciences Leadership
The £400 million investment, scheduled over the next three years, forms part of GSK’s broader strategy to expand its research capabilities while reinforcing the United Kingdom’s life sciences sector. The company currently invests more than £6 billion annually in global research and development, including over £1.5 billion each year within the UK, making it one of the country’s largest private-sector investors in biomedical innovation. The new Cambridge centre will complement GSK’s extensive research collaborations with institutions including the University of Oxford, King’s College London, Imperial College London, the University of Manchester, the Wellcome Trust, and the Francis Crick Institute. As part of its long-term research transformation strategy, GSK will gradually transition employees from its Stevenage R&D facility to Cambridge by 2029, while simultaneously upgrading its existing laboratories in Ware, Hertfordshire, to establish a more integrated environment for drug development and commercial manufacturing scale-up.
