LEXINGTON, Massachusetts — October 12, 2026
FUJIFILM Healthcare Americas Corporation announced the launch of Synapse Pathology v3.0, a major software release introducing more than 50 new features and functions to enhance digital pathology workflows and expand artificial intelligence (AI) integration. The updated platform is designed to help pathologists and laboratories navigate, evaluate, measure, classify and organize digital pathology cases more efficiently. The release also introduces Synapse AI Orchestrator, which is designed to connect the platform with compatible third-party AI applications, and advances the company’s AI strategy through Synapse Pathology AI Foundry, a pathology-specific foundation model trained using millions of pathology images. Fujifilm plans to showcase the updated platform and its AI capabilities at Pathology Visions 2026, scheduled for October 17–20 in San Diego, California. The launch reflects the company’s focus on combining digital pathology infrastructure with specialized AI tools to support evolving laboratory needs and future diagnostic workflows.
Synapse Pathology v3.0 Adds More Than 50 Workflow Enhancements
The latest release places significant emphasis on user experience and workflow efficiency, incorporating customer feedback into a broad range of platform improvements. New and enhanced capabilities include Smart Worklist sorting, additional navigation devices, slide tagging, improved measurement tools and enhanced collaboration features. These functions are intended to help pathologists manage digital cases and work with pathology images more effectively within a connected environment. Fujifilm has also enhanced its proprietary TissueSync® and TissueDirect® algorithms, extending the platform’s existing AI capabilities. In addition, Synapse Pathology v3.0 introduces new ways to access compatible third-party AI applications, including solutions from Ibex designed to support malignancy detection in prostate, breast and gastric specimens. Integrating these tools into digital pathology workflows could help laboratories access specialized analytical capabilities without relying exclusively on separate applications. The company positions the release as a flexible platform designed to accommodate changing laboratory requirements as digital pathology adoption and AI-assisted analysis continue to develop.
AI Orchestrator Connects Digital Pathology Applications
A central component of the release is Synapse AI Orchestrator, Fujifilm’s automated distribution hub for connecting Synapse Pathology with its growing ecosystem of third-party AI partners. The technology is designed to streamline information exchange between the pathology platform and compatible AI applications, providing infrastructure for laboratories to incorporate specialized algorithms into existing digital workflows. By connecting these applications within a broader environment, the orchestrator aims to reduce the need for pathologists to move between separate systems when accessing different AI capabilities. The approach is intended to provide a scalable foundation for laboratories seeking to introduce multiple analytical tools as their needs evolve. The platform’s expanded integration capabilities are particularly relevant as pathology AI applications become increasingly specialized for different tissue types, diagnostic tasks and clinical questions. Fujifilm’s strategy combines its existing digital pathology software and proprietary algorithms with third-party solutions, creating opportunities to bring multiple AI functions into a more connected workflow. The company’s announcement describes these capabilities as infrastructure for integrating AI into pathology practice; their impact on diagnostic performance and laboratory efficiency will depend on individual applications and real-world use.
AI Foundry Introduces a Pathology-Specific Foundation Model
Fujifilm will also introduce Synapse Pathology AI Foundry, its pathology-specific AI foundation model, at Pathology Visions 2026. Trained using millions of pathology images, the model is intended to provide a broad technological foundation for current and future pathology AI applications rather than being limited to a single narrowly defined task. Fujifilm plans to demonstrate what it describes as the world’s first foundation model for screening in pathology. The model is designed to identify and distinguish normal, inflammatory, atypical and malignant conditions in gastrointestinal specimens. The demonstration will illustrate how large-scale, pathology-specific AI models may support the development of tools for increasingly complex diagnostic workflows. The company will also present research describing the development of AI-based diagnostic and prognostic risk scores in gastrointestinal cancers using hematoxylin and eosin whole-slide images. The scientific poster, titled “From Diagnostic to Prognostic Risk Scores in GI Cancers: Using AI in H&E WSIs for Clinical Insights,” is scheduled for October 16 at 5:00 p.m. at display number 9 during Session 1 at the reception. AI Foundry is designated for research use only (RUO) and should not be interpreted as an approved diagnostic product.
