Fortrea has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the Early Phase Services division of Worldwide Clinical Trials in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $45 million. The transaction includes Worldwide’s Clinical Pharmacology Unit and Bioanalytical Laboratory operations in Texas, expanding Fortrea’s early clinical development capabilities with dedicated bioanalytical infrastructure and additional clinical research capacity. The acquisition is intended to strengthen Fortrea’s integrated development platform across Phase I through Phase IV, while enabling more coordinated execution of early-stage clinical and bioanalytical activities for biopharmaceutical sponsors.
Fortrea Adds Texas Early Phase Infrastructure
The acquired business includes a 60,000-square-foot GLP-compliant bioanalytical laboratory in Austin, a 200-bed GCP-compliant clinical pharmacology unit in San Antonio, and a biospecimen storage facility in Pflugerville, Texas. Together, these facilities provide capabilities spanning clinical pharmacology, bioanalysis and specimen management for early-stage drug development. Fortrea said the addition will bring large- and small-molecule bioanalytical capabilities in-house, potentially reducing operational handoffs between clinical and laboratory functions. The expanded infrastructure is also expected to provide greater flexibility for simple and complex studies, larger participant programs, distinct volunteer populations and increased bed capacity across Fortrea’s North American early development network.
Acquisition Strengthens Integrated Clinical Development
The transaction complements Fortrea’s existing Clinical Pharmacology Services and broader early-phase capabilities by adding dedicated laboratory operations to its clinical research infrastructure. The combined platform is designed to provide sponsors with a more integrated pathway from first-in-human studies through proof-of-concept, while supporting subsequent development stages and post-approval evidence generation. Fortrea and Worldwide also plan to enter a series of agreements intended to maintain continuity for customers, employees and ongoing programs throughout the transition. Worldwide will retain its broader global clinical development capabilities and continue supporting Phase I studies through its external site network while directing additional investment toward its growing late-stage business.

Fortrea and Worldwide Align Growth Strategies
The acquisition supports Fortrea’s strategy of expanding scientific capabilities and capacity at the front end of the drug development lifecycle, while Worldwide Clinical Trials intends to focus resources on its rapidly expanding late-stage operations in oncology, neuroscience, internal medicine and rare disease. The transaction remains subject to necessary regulatory and license approvals and the execution of certain services agreements before closing. Once completed, the acquired Early Phase Services operations will become part of Fortrea’s Clinical Pharmacology Services business. The deal represents a strategic expansion of Fortrea’s CRO platform, combining clinical pharmacology, bioanalytical testing and broader clinical development capabilities to support sponsors across increasingly complex drug development programs.
