Danaher Corporation has announced plans to launch its first AI-powered autonomous laboratory, marking a significant step in the company’s efforts to accelerate life sciences research through artificial intelligence, robotics and connected laboratory technologies. The new laboratory is designed to help researchers develop custom antibodies and other molecular tools more efficiently by combining technologies from multiple Danaher operating companies within a connected workflow. Expected to operate at scale in early 2027, the autonomous lab will use an automated design-make-test-learn cycle in which artificial intelligence helps design affinity reagents, robotics supports laboratory experimentation, and experimental results are continuously fed back into the system to improve subsequent designs. Danaher says the approach could help researchers move from discovery to breakthrough up to eight times faster while increasing annual reagent generation as the laboratory scales.
Danaher Combines AI, Robotics and Laboratory Technologies
The new autonomous laboratory will be based at Abcam, a Danaher company, and will bring together technologies and expertise from several businesses across Danaher’s life sciences ecosystem. These include Beckman Coulter Life Sciences, Cytiva, Genedata, Integrated DNA Technologies and Molecular Devices, creating an integrated environment for automated scientific research. The laboratory will use artificial intelligence to help design new affinity reagents, including antibodies, before building and testing those reagents through automated processes. Each experimental result can then be incorporated into the model, allowing subsequent designs to be refined continuously. Robotic automation and device orchestration are being developed collaboratively with Automata, supporting the connected operation of laboratory instruments and workflows. This combination of AI, automation and laboratory expertise is intended to reduce the time required for repetitive research cycles while maintaining verification and testing throughout the process.
Autonomous Lab Targets Faster Scientific Discovery
Danaher says the laboratory is designed around four key objectives: speed, scale, quality and sustainability. The company expects the platform to enable up to 8x faster discovery of affinity reagents, potentially helping scientists move more rapidly from an initial research concept toward validated molecular tools. As the system scales, Danaher anticipates the potential for a tenfold increase in annual reagent generation, moving from tens to hundreds of reagents per year. Importantly, the automated workflow is designed to verify and test each generated design, with results contributing to subsequent development rather than simply prioritizing speed. Danaher also expects the approach to complement traditional immunization-based methods used in antibody and research-tool discovery over time. The continuous feedback model could help researchers prioritize promising designs before laboratory production and support more consistent experimentation through robotics.
Danaher Expands Connected Science Strategy
The autonomous laboratory represents an early component of a broader Danaher initiative focused on developing smart instruments, AI-ready data and intelligent agentic systems that can be connected into integrated research workflows. According to the company, these technologies are intended to make laboratory instruments easier to integrate and control programmatically while improving data quality and generating deeper scientific insights. By connecting intelligent devices, Danaher aims to create autonomous laboratories capable of executing repeated design-make-test-learn cycles with greater speed, consistency and standardization. The company views the new laboratory as a proof point for how AI and automation can support scientific discovery and biomedical research, while scientists continue to make key decisions and focus on complex scientific challenges requiring human expertise. The initiative reflects Danaher’s continued investment in connected science and its goal of helping researchers move from scientific questions to validated answers with greater speed and confidence.
