Strategic Singapore Collaboration Accelerates Ocular Innovation
The newly established collaboration brings together Cirrus Therapeutics, Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) and Duke-NUS Medical School’s Centre for Vision Research, creating a multidisciplinary partnership focused on advancing innovative ophthalmic technologies. Supported by Singapore’s National Medical Research Council (NMRC) and the National Health Innovation Centre Singapore (NHIC), the collaboration aims to accelerate scientific discovery, preclinical research and future clinical development of novel therapies targeting retinal diseases. SERI, the research institute of the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC), is internationally recognized for its leadership in ophthalmology research and has played a major role in advancing the understanding and treatment of eye diseases across Asia and globally. Through this collaboration, Cirrus will gain access to internationally recognized clinical research expertise while strengthening its presence within one of the world’s fastest-growing biotechnology and healthcare innovation ecosystems.
Gene Therapy Pipeline Targets Geographic Atrophy and AMD
At the center of Cirrus Therapeutics’ development strategy is its lead preclinical ocular gene therapy, designed to restore IRAK-M, an important immune regulatory protein believed to play a key role in the progression of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and geographic atrophy (GA). By restoring IRAK-M expression within retinal cells using an adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapy platform, the company aims to slow disease progression, preserve central vision and potentially address one of the underlying biological mechanisms responsible for retinal degeneration. In addition to its lead gene therapy program, Cirrus is advancing a next-generation retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cell therapy intended to restore vision in patients with advanced geographic atrophy involving central retinal damage. Together, these complementary gene and cell therapy programs represent the company’s long-term commitment to developing disease-modifying therapies capable of extending ocular healthspan and improving quality of life for patients affected by chronic blinding disorders.
