Brixton Biosciences has strengthened its Board of Directors with the appointment of three experienced industry leaders as the company advances toward potential FDA marketing authorization and commercialization of Reneurx™ Nerve-Selective Therapy for pain associated with knee osteoarthritis. The new directors are John Maraganore, Ph.D., founding CEO of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals and a pioneer in RNA interference, Brent Saunders, Chairman and CEO of Bausch + Lomb and an experienced biopharmaceutical deal-maker, and Elton Brand, former General Manager of the Philadelphia 76ers. The appointments come at an important stage for Brixton as it prepares for the potential transition of Reneurx from clinical development toward commercialization. Reneurx represents the company’s lead investigational product and is based on Brixton’s approach of using a nerve-selective biomaterial to provide targeted and potentially durable pain relief. The addition of experienced leaders from biotechnology, biopharma and sports management expands the company’s strategic expertise as it prepares for the next phase of development.
Reneurx Targets Pain Associated With Knee Osteoarthritis
Brixton’s immediate development focus is Reneurx™ Nerve-Selective Therapy, an investigational approach designed to address pain associated with knee osteoarthritis through selective targeting of pain-signaling nerves. Unlike conventional systemic pain medicines, Brixton is developing a biomaterial-based strategy intended to deliver localized and durable pain relief. The company’s broader technology platform is focused on developing therapies that can potentially provide targeted treatment for chronic and acute pain while reducing dependence on conventional pharmacological approaches. The current corporate milestone is particularly significant because Brixton is preparing for potential FDA marketing authorization, although authorization has not yet been granted and commercialization remains dependent on regulatory review and applicable requirements. If approved, Reneurx could represent an important addition to Brixton’s pipeline as the company seeks to establish a targeted approach for patients experiencing persistent pain related to degenerative joint disease. Brixton Builds Broader Drug-Free Pain Technology Platform
Brixton’s Reneurx program builds on a wider development strategy focused on drug-free and nerve-selective pain relief. In 2024, the company announced $35 million in Series B financing to advance its pain technology platform, while an earlier $2 million NIH HEAL Initiative grant supported development of Neural Ice™, an injectable drug-free technology designed for chronic and postoperative pain. Neural Ice previously received FDA Breakthrough Device designation, highlighting the company’s broader effort to develop alternatives to conventional pain management approaches. While these programs are distinct from Reneurx, they demonstrate Brixton’s continued focus on localized biomaterial-based approaches to pain treatment.
