BioOra Limited and Wellington Zhaotai Therapies Limited (WZTL) have signed a binding Heads of Terms agreement granting BioOra exclusive global rights outside China and India to develop and commercialize WZTL-002, a novel third-generation anti-CD19 CAR T-cell therapy targeting haematological cancers and autoimmune diseases. The agreement significantly expands BioOra’s commercial footprint beyond its existing Australia and New Zealand rights and positions the company to enter major international markets including the United States, Europe, and the United Kingdom. The partnership combines WZTL’s advanced CAR-T platform with BioOra’s automated manufacturing technology, creating a strategic pathway to deliver lower-cost and more scalable personalized cell therapies globally.
Atla-cel Demonstrates Strong Safety and Clinical Potential
The licensed therapy, commercialized by BioOra as Atla-cel, is an autologous CAR T-cell product incorporating patented co-stimulatory domains designed to improve efficacy while reducing severe toxicities commonly associated with earlier-generation CAR-T therapies. The therapy’s clinical potential was demonstrated in New Zealand’s first CAR-T clinical trial, ENABLE-1, sponsored by the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research in collaboration with Wellington Zhaotai. Data from 30 patients showed a strong complete response rate alongside fewer serious toxicities compared with first- and second-generation CAR-T therapies, particularly lower rates of neurotoxicity. These findings are highly significant in the rapidly evolving CAR-T sector, where treatment-related safety concerns and manufacturing complexity remain major barriers to broader adoption.
Automated Manufacturing Creates Competitive Advantage
A key differentiator for BioOra is its automated CAR-T manufacturing platform utilizing the Cocoon® system developed by Octane Medical Group. Unlike traditional manual manufacturing methods, the automated system is designed to provide more consistent production, greater scalability, and significantly lower manufacturing costs. This capability could become a major commercial advantage as the company advances toward broader international expansion. High manufacturing expenses and logistical challenges have historically limited patient access to CAR-T therapies worldwide, with many approved treatments carrying costs exceeding hundreds of thousands of dollars per patient. BioOra believes its automated approach can help solve critical scalability and affordability challenges while supporting commercial supply as Atla-cel advances through later-stage development.
Phase 2 Registration Trial Advances Toward Market Approval
BioOra and the Malaghan Institute are currently advancing ENABLE-2, a pivotal Phase 2 registration study evaluating Atla-cel in patients with relapsed or refractory large B-cell lymphoma. The trial is designed to support potential regulatory approval in both Australia and New Zealand. Success in ENABLE-2 could establish the foundation for broader international expansion under the newly signed agreement with Wellington Zhaotai. In addition to blood cancers, the underlying CAR-T platform may also have future applications in autoimmune diseases and solid tumors, creating longer-term pipeline expansion opportunities across multiple high-value therapeutic areas.
Global Expansion Strategy Targets CAR-T Accessibility
The agreement reflects growing global demand for more accessible CAR-T therapies as the cell therapy market continues expanding rapidly. BioOra CEO John Robson emphasized that the partnership is focused not only on commercial growth but also on improving patient access to life-saving personalized therapies that remain unavailable to many patients due to cost and manufacturing limitations. Chairman Dr. Peter Crabree described CAR-T therapy as one of the most transformative oncology innovations of the past decade but acknowledged that access remains highly unequal worldwide.
