Geneva, Switzerland — September 2026
Alcon announced the commercial launch of UNITY® M, a premium ophthalmic surgical microscope designed to provide surgeons with precise control, enhanced visualization and greater customization during eye surgery. The microscope is the latest addition to Alcon’s UNITY® surgical platform, combining advanced optics, Color Tunable Illumination, improved ergonomics and an intuitive interface within a modular architecture designed to support future upgrades. The commercial rollout is expected to begin in the United States and Japan later in 2026, followed by additional markets including Europe.
UNITY M Delivers Enhanced Visualization During Surgery
The base UNITY M system incorporates several visualization technologies intended to support stable and consistent views throughout ophthalmic procedures. Its Red Reflex technology provides a reported zone up to six times larger than the Zeiss ARTEVO, designed to remain stable as the eye moves and across different pupil sizes and microscope positions. The system also introduces Color Tunable Illumination, designed to allow surgeons to adjust illumination characteristics to improve tissue contrast and detail compared with traditional illumination systems. An optimized depth of field further supports continuous visualization as the eye shifts during surgery.
Modular Architecture Enables Future Customization
A key feature of UNITY M is its modular architecture, which allows surgeons to configure the microscope according to their clinical requirements and preferences. The platform is designed to support both anterior and posterior segment surgery, with purpose-built optimizations and modular upgrades that can be introduced over time. This approach is intended to allow ophthalmic practices to expand or customize their systems as clinical requirements evolve rather than replacing the entire platform.
UNITY M Expands Alcon’s Connected Surgical Ecosystem
UNITY M is designed to integrate with Alcon’s broader ecosystem of surgical products, digital technologies and services. It follows the earlier UNITY VCS and UNITY CS systems as the third addition to the UNITY platform. Alcon said the broader platform is intended to create a more connected and future-ready surgical environment while supporting streamlined workflows and personalization for eye-care professionals. UNITY M has received CE Mark and regulatory approvals in India, Europe, Canada, Japan and the United States, with inventory beginning to ship in September 2026.
